What news aggregator app are people actually happy with long term?

Been keeping an eye on this and wanted to know what others think.

Real answers from people here are usually more useful than search results.

Context might help - I am not trying to do anything complicated, just want to make sure I do not overcomplicate it.

Feedly has been the one that stuck for me after bouncing between loads of apps.

The ability to group sources into folders makes a huge difference once you follow more than a handful of sites. Tech, science, local news and hobbies all stay separate instead of becoming one endless stream.

The free version is perfectly usable, although some of the smarter filtering is behind the paid tier.

Biggest tip is to spend a bit of time pruning noisy sources. A smaller list of reliable sites beats hundreds of clickbait headlines every day.

Inoreader deserves a mention because the filtering options are excellent.

Being able to automatically hide articles containing certain keywords saved me from reading the same AI press release copied across twenty websites. It takes a little setup but pays off pretty quickly.

Funny how half the battle is not finding more news, it is finding less of the repetitive stuff.

Google News still works well for broad coverage, but the recommendations can become an echo chamber if you are not careful.

Every now and then I deliberately search for topics outside my usual interests just to shake things up. Otherwise it starts assuming every spare minute should involve CPUs, GPUs and AI.

The interface is simple though, which counts for a lot.

RSS might sound old fashioned, but it is still the most reliable approach.

No algorithm deciding what should be important, no endless sponsored posts, just the sites you chose appearing in chronological order. There is something refreshing about that.

Sometimes the oldest technology ages the best.

Ground News has been pretty interesting if you like comparing how different outlets cover the same story.

The left, centre and right comparisons are not perfect, but they do encourage reading beyond a single source. That alone makes it more useful than apps that simply keep reinforcing what you already believe.

It is not my only news app, but it has earned a permanent spot.

After trying several apps, the surprise winner ended up being a self-hosted RSS reader synced across devices.

Setup took longer than downloading an app, but once it was running there were no adverts, no mystery recommendations and complete control over subscriptions.

Not everyone wants that level of tinkering, but if you already run a home server it is worth a look.

Flipboard looked fantastic the first few weeks, then gradually started surfacing more content I was not actually interested in.

The magazine style layout is nice for casual browsing, although when looking for breaking tech news it sometimes feels slower than a straightforward list.

The training feature where you teach it which articles you prefer sounded gimmicky at first, but after using it for a while the recommendations became noticeably better without feeling overwhelming.

Still keep a plain RSS feed alongside it though, just as a sanity check.

Microsoft Start is not as bad as people make out.

It comes preinstalled on plenty of devices, so lots of users never give it much thought. After tweaking the interests and hiding the celebrity gossip, it becomes a fairly decent general news reader.

Would it be my first recommendation? Probably not, but it is better than its reputation.
