Thinking about switching to an electric car but trying to work out if it actually saves money long term.

On paper it looks cheaper, but then you hear about battery costs, insurance, charging, etc.

For anyone already driving an EV in the UK, is it genuinely cheaper or does it even out over time?

Real numbers would be helpful if possible.

Running costs are definitely lower day to day.

Charging at home is much cheaper than fuel, especially on off peak tariffs.

But upfront cost and depreciation can offset that depending on the car.

So yeah, cheaper to run, but total cost depends on how long you keep it.

Biggest saving for me is maintenance.

No oil changes, fewer moving parts, less to go wrong.

That adds up over time more than people realise.

For smaller journeys yes I see the logic. but financially its not yet at the point for me driving 50 miles each way to work.

That is exactly the lesson I learned. The part people always underestimate is the finishing, not the main job.

Take your time with it and it will come out well.

That is the obvious answer but not always the right one. I would try the least destructive fix first before changing too much at once.

Give it a go and report back.
