Friday's SmackDown in Sacramento ended with Cody Rhodes landing a Punt Kick on Baron Corbin. Fightful reports that Corbin interrupted a Rhodes promo near the end of the show, and the pair started an impromptu match at the Golden 1 Center

Randy Orton then got involved, so there was no finish to the match. All three brawled at ringside before heading back into the ring. Orton tried a Punt Kick on Rhodes, but Rhodes escaped and hit a Cody Cutter

As Rhodes lined up a Punt Kick on Orton, Corbin attacked him from behind. Rhodes answered with a Super Cutter on Corbin and ended the show with a Punt Kick to the former King of the Ring. Fightful's Corey Brennan reported that WWE's internal title for the episode was Punt It Down The Rhodes, which is a great piece of wordplay

The background makes the Punt Kick important. Rhodes lost his Saturday Night's Main Event match to Orton after hesitating to use it. Orton did not hesitate when they met at WrestleMania 42. Rhodes finally using the move suggests he is willing to fight dirtier now

It was an entertaining way to close the show and a clear step in Cody's story. Corbin getting a spotlight in a main event segment is a nice surprise too. Where it leads next will be interesting

Does Cody using the Punt Kick change his character? And does Corbin deserve a proper programme with him?
