Avengers: Doomsday finally has a real trailer, and yes, RDJ is playing Doctor Doom

[Oscar_75]

After months of vague teasers and bizarre promotional clips featuring nothing but empty chairs, Marvel has released an actual trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, the first true Avengers film since Endgame back in 2019. The footage confirms a massive roster, the X-Men, Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four all appear alongside Thor, Black Panther, Shang-Chi, Loki, Ant-Man and two separate Captain Americas

True to comic book team-up formula, the trailer includes some heroes fighting each other rather than the actual villain, presumably the result of a first act misunderstanding that gets resolved once the real threat becomes clear. Chris Evans returns as Captain America after sitting out the franchise entirely following his character's ending in Endgame, while Robert Downey Jr's return as the film's central antagonist, Doctor Doom, is confirmed but the trailer doesn't show him out of costume

The stakes attached to this one go beyond a typical crossover, it's likely the final outing for the 2000s era X-Men cast led by Patrick Stewart, and quite possibly Chris Evans's last appearance in the role too. Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027, so expect the trailer's ending to set up some kind of cliffhanger rather than a clean resolution

Heroes fighting each other before the actual villain shows up is such a tired comic book movie formula at this point, but somehow it still works every single time when the cast is this stacked

[Lynx55]

No footage of RDJ out of the Doom costume yet feels like a deliberate choice to save that reveal for closer to release rather than spoil it in the first real trailer

[StayReadyKev91]

This being framed as possibly the last outing for both the 2000s X-Men cast and Chris Evans's Captain America gives it a genuine sense of finality beyond just being another crossover event

[Seb5]

Empty chair teasers for months only to finally deliver this stacked a roster in one trailer is exactly the kind of slow burn marketing rollout that either builds real anticipation or just tests people's patience

[SlayedRebellion]

Two separate Captain Americas in the same movie is a detail that's going to need some serious explaining, curious how the film actually threads that particular needle narratively

[NightHarbour]

December 18 into Secret Wars a year later feels like Marvel building toward another Endgame scale event, the pressure on this one to actually deliver is enormous given that comparison

[Freddy95]

RDJ playing Doctor Doom is a bold choice because the audience will spend the entire first act wondering when Tony Stark is going to appear. That association can be useful if the story treats it as deliberate psychological pressure, but it becomes distracting if Doom is merely Iron Man with a different mask.

The character needs his own voice, posture, and worldview. Doom should feel like a ruler and an ideologue, not a sarcastic genius who wandered into the wrong franchise. The trailer can sell the casting; the film has to justify it.

[Matt95]

The empty chair campaign went on long enough that it became a joke, but the payoff was undeniably effective. Marvel turned a lack of information into a weekly conversation and then finally dropped a trailer packed with enough names to restart every argument at once.

That is clever marketing, though it also creates a huge expectation problem. A stacked roster can make the movie feel like an event before anyone knows whether the story gives those characters anything meaningful to do.

[FrostBear]

The biggest danger is not RDJ himself. It is the possibility that Doctor Doom becomes another excuse for the multiverse to recycle familiar faces instead of moving the saga forward.

A good Doom story should be about power, control, pride, and the belief that only one person is capable of saving the world. Those themes are strong enough without relying on surprise cameos every ten minutes.

[Rabbit]

Marvel has earned some scepticism after several projects made the overall universe feel like homework. A trailer full of returning heroes may bring back excitement, but excitement is not the same thing as coherence.

The film needs a clear emotional centre. If every character gets one memorable line and a dramatic entrance, the audience may cheer in the moment and forget the plot by the time the credits roll. The roster should support the story, not become the story.

[ECWAlfie47]

Casting a beloved actor as a famous villain can work if the performance is allowed to be genuinely unpleasant. Doom should not be softened just because viewers associate the actor with one of the most popular heroes in modern blockbuster cinema.

There should be scenes where he is patient, frightening, and completely convinced that his cruelty is a form of mercy. That is more interesting than simply giving him a bigger suit and louder dialogue.

[Dan]

The trailer seems to be selling two movies at once: the return of a familiar face and the arrival of a new antagonist. Those are not automatically compatible appeals.

If the film wants us to see RDJ as Doom rather than as a nostalgic callback, it should avoid copying the visual grammar of his old role. Different rhythms, different humour, and perhaps long stretches where the mask stays on would help.

[MickFoley]

A huge ensemble can be a strength when the characters have contrasting goals. The best team-up stories are not just collections of heroes standing in a line; they are arguments about what should happen next.

Doom is perfect for that kind of conflict because he can offer a solution that sounds practical, efficient, and horrifying. Let the heroes disagree about whether defeating him might also destroy the only plan that could save reality. That gives the spectacle some weight.

[GhostRider]

The chair teasers were ridiculous, but they did create a sense that something unusually secretive was happening. Now that the trailer is out, the reaction is almost more interesting than the campaign itself because people have to decide whether the reveal was worth the wait.

For me, the answer depends on execution. A surprise is valuable once; a well-written villain can carry a whole era. If RDJ brings real menace instead of just nostalgia, the casting could be more than a stunt.

[Harper48]

The trailer's roster raises a practical question about screen time. With enough major characters, the film could become a relay race in which every performer gets a few minutes before the next entrance.

Ensemble movies need hierarchy. Some characters can be central, some can provide texture, and some can appear briefly without the story pretending they all have equal importance. Trying to give everyone a complete arc is how a three-hour movie starts feeling rushed.

[Callum28]

There is a fair argument that the casting is too self-conscious. Bringing back the actor most associated with the franchise and putting him in a villain role can look like Marvel admitting it needs the past to make the future interesting.

But familiar casting can also create productive discomfort. Every time Doom appears, the audience will be asking what remains of the old identity and whether that resemblance is being used by the villain himself. The film should exploit that tension rather than apologise for it.

[Patrick93]

One concern is that Doom could be written as an upgraded version of the usual Marvel antagonist: witty, theatrical, defeated by teamwork, and gone before the next phase begins. That would waste both the character and the casting.

He should be allowed to win something important. The heroes need to experience his competence before they can challenge his ideology, and the audience needs to believe that his plan might work for reasons beyond plot convenience. A villain who loses every round is not a threat, regardless of how expensive the armour looks.

[Nicola]

A multiverse story can still be emotionally grounded if the characters treat alternate realities as personal losses rather than colourful scenery. Doom should threaten more than cities and timelines; he should force people to decide which version of home they are willing to sacrifice.

That would also make the RDJ casting matter in a thematic way. The audience recognises the face, but the story can ask whether recognition is enough to create loyalty. Sometimes the person who looks familiar is precisely the person you should fear.

[StoneCold_99]

Doom has always worked best when he is both larger than life and painfully human. His arrogance is funny until the audience realises that he genuinely believes every atrocity is justified by the future he intends to build.

That complexity would give RDJ something new to play. A villain who thinks he is the responsible adult in a room full of reckless heroes can be much more unsettling than a simple destroy-the-world antagonist.

[Jordan89]

The marketing may have learned the wrong lesson from earlier superhero campaigns. Mystery works when there is a strong story underneath it; otherwise people fill the silence with expectations no movie can satisfy.

The trailer at least gives viewers something concrete to discuss. Now the conversation can move from guessing who might be in the film to asking why these specific people are needed and what Doom wants from them. That is a healthier kind of hype.

[Plateau45]

The actual trailer may have arrived late because Marvel wanted the first proper look to feel like a declaration rather than another fragment. Empty chairs are a strange way to communicate confidence, but the final reveal certainly benefited from the accumulated curiosity.

Now the studio has to sustain interest without spoiling the entire film. The next marketing beat should probably focus on tone and character rather than adding another dozen surprise appearances. We already know the room is full; show us what happens when the guests start arguing.

[MJF_Fan]

There is a lot to like in the reveal, but the movie will need restraint. Not every frame needs a callback, not every line needs to become a meme, and not every returning character needs a dramatic slow-motion entrance.

Let Doom dominate through presence rather than noise. If he can walk into a scene and change the behaviour of everyone around him, the film will feel confident. If he just announces his plan while the heroes trade jokes, the mask will be the most intimidating thing on screen.
