The 2026 World Cup set a new all-time tournament attendance record during last night's matches. The total reached 3,605,357, surpassing the previous record of 3,587,538 set at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. The record was broken before the tournament even reached the Round of 32. With knockout rounds still to come across 16 stadiums in 16 cities the final attendance figure will dwarf anything previously recorded. The expanded 48-team format across three host nations with enormous stadium capacities has delivered what its architects promised. The biggest sporting tournament in the world is now also the most attended. Whatever criticisms exist about format and schedule the numbers tell a story about global appetite for football that is difficult to argue with.
