May 28 2026 has been an unusually dense news day. Europe's fifth quantum computer came online in Spain. Iran ended its monthslong internet shutdown though YouTube and Instagram remain restricted. London recorded its hottest May day ever at 35 degrees Celsius, shattering the previous record by two degrees. Ebola's epicentre was confirmed in Mongbwalu, a 130,000-person gold mining town in eastern Congo.

Also today: QUDORA opened a Japanese subsidiary for trapped-ion quantum. Google Willow access was awarded to King's College London for brain neuron quantum research. Q-CTRL claimed defence logistics quantum advantage by 2027. Berkeley Lab published its quantum workforce programme. The HPCKP26 conference in Barcelona announced its lineup.

It is a Thursday

The quantum news density on a single Thursday in May 2026 is the indicator of where the field actually is. Five items in one day from different continents, different companies, different approaches. The pace has changed

Iran getting internet back and Europe hitting 35 degrees in May on the same day is the 2026 world in miniature. Infrastructure control and climate change are the two forces reshaping daily life at the same time

Ebola in a gold mining town is the specific geography that makes outbreak control hardest. The mobility of mining populations, the infrastructure limitations, the security situation in Ituri. All three factors are present

London at 35 degrees while Scotland has wildfires is the UK climate story that should be the front page lead but competed today with Iran, Congo, quantum, and a dozen other things

The HPCKP26 conference in Barcelona bringing together HPC, AI, and quantum leaders in June is the calendar event worth knowing about for anyone following where the field is going technically
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)

A Thursday in late May 2026 producing this volume of significant news simultaneously is either the new normal or a genuinely unusual convergence. My sense is it is the new normal and we are not processing the pace correctly
Be excellent to each other
