Most overrated tactic or formation in football right now, what's your pick

[Di82]

Every era of football has a tactical trend that gets talked about like it's some revolutionary breakthrough when in reality it's often just one good team executing something well with elite personnel, and I'm curious what people here think is currently the most overrated tactic or formation getting praised right now regardless of who's actually running it

My own pick is the high line with an ultra aggressive offside trap, it looks genuinely spectacular when a team has the specific pace and coordination to pull it off consistently, but for every side that executes it well there seem to be three others copying the shape without the personnel to actually support it, and they just get repeatedly played through on the counter as a result

Inverted fullbacks feel like a similar case to me, brilliant when you happen to have a technical defender who can actually function like a midfielder once tucked infield, but plenty of coaches seem to be forcing a fairly standard defender into that exact role purely because it's currently fashionable, and it just leaves obvious gaps out wide that a decent winger can exploit all game long

What actually separates the good version of any given tactic from the overrated hype version usually comes down entirely to personnel fit rather than the system itself being inherently good or bad, the same shape that looks genius with one squad looks like a tactical disaster with a different one lacking the specific attributes that system actually demands

Curious whether people think this is a new problem in the punditry era specifically, or whether every football generation has always had its own version of a trendy tactic getting massively overpraised purely because the coaching community and pundits alike love talking about the shape itself more than they love actually assessing whether the underlying personnel genuinely fits it

[LivMorgan]

Inverted fullbacks is such a good pick, watched three separate teams try to copy that shape this season with a defender who clearly wasn't comfortable on the ball in tight central areas, ended up conceding constantly through exactly the space that role is supposed to protect

[Kayla82]

High line specifically only works with an elite defensive coordinator and players fast enough to recover, most teams copying it are basically betting their entire defensive structure on never facing a single quick forward all season

[Sega26]

Would add gegenpressing to this list too, incredible when your squad has the fitness and depth to sustain it across a full ninety minutes, an absolute disaster by minute seventy when your legs are gone and the opposition just walks through the gaps you've left behind

[BatchWizard]

The personnel fit point is really the whole argument here honestly, there's no such thing as an objectively good or bad tactic in isolation, only a tactic that fits or doesn't fit the specific players actually available to execute it

[Cobra]

Every generation absolutely has had this exact same problem, total football in the seventies, tiki taka in the two thousands, it's always the same underlying story of one great team's system getting copied everywhere without the specific players needed to actually replicate it properly

[Thomas]

Punditry loves talking about systems because it's easier and more visually interesting to describe a shape on a whiteboard than to properly evaluate whether eleven specific individual players actually have the attributes that shape requires

[Daemon]

False nine is my pick for most overrated right now, works brilliantly with one specific type of technical forward, completely nullifies your attack if you force a clear traditional target man striker into that same exact role
