A lot of people say they dislike poetry when really they just have not found the right entry point yet. Being forced to analyse poems in school probably scared off quite a few readers too.

The best beginner poetry books are usually the ones that feel human first and literary second. They invite people in instead of testing them.

If a friend told you they had never enjoyed poetry before, which book would you hand them first?

I suspect many people would choose something approachable and reflective like The Hill We Climb, because it feels alive and spoken rather than distant and formal

I would probably recommend short modern poetry first because it is less intimidating

The right poem at the right moment matters more than the perfect poetry book

I think spoken word style poetry works really well for beginners because you can hear the rhythm naturally

A beginner book should make someone curious enough to keep reading, not make them feel stupid

Poetry becomes much more enjoyable once you stop worrying about whether you are interpreting it correctly
