I have seen loads of surface-level takes on this elsewhere.

Even short answers are useful, especially if you have tried it yourself.

I suspect the answer is more nuanced than it first looks, which is why I wanted to ask people who have been there.

The practical reality is usually somewhere between the optimistic recommendation and the pessimistic warning.

Anyone else looked into this properly?

If I am honest I agree completely. Injuries change everything and people forget to factor that in.

The answer really depends on what you are building. There is no single best forum software in 2026 because a small hobby community and a huge support forum have completely different needs.

For a traditional forum experience I still think SMF deserves more credit than it gets. It is lightweight, flexible, and you actually own the installation rather than renting a service.

A lot of newer platforms look flashy but sometimes forget that a forum is supposed to be easy to browse and search. Pretty buttons do not replace a good community.

After trying several options over the years, the biggest lesson was that software choice matters less than the people running the forum.

A dead community on the fanciest platform is still a dead community. A basic forum with good moderation and active members will beat it every time.

That said, my personal shortlist would include SMF, XenForo and Discourse depending on the audience. They all solve slightly different problems.

I would probably put XenForo near the top if money is not an issue. The ecosystem is huge and the user experience is polished.

However, the licence cost and reliance on paid addons can become painful for smaller communities.

SMF has always appealed to me because it feels like a proper old-school forum package. It does not try to turn every discussion into a social media feed.

The best forum software is the one that does not fight you after installation. That sounds obvious, but many platforms become a full-time maintenance job.

Ran a community years ago on a system that needed constant plugin updates and security checks. Eventually the software work became bigger than managing the actual forum.

A stable platform with a good admin experience is worth a lot.
