Just a general one.

Real answers from people here are usually more useful than search results.

Happy to provide more detail if it helps narrow things down. :-\

Appreciate any honest input

Not worth cutting corners on that part. The materials are usually a smaller cost than the tools you need to work with them.

Take your time with it and it will come out well

GreenEcho

Okay that makes more sense than what I had in my head. Worth reading more about this. :D

Bit fiddly but that is the right approach. I find the YouTube tutorials are better than any written guide for the tricky bits.

Let us know how it turns out. :)

That works in theory but the prep is more involved than it sounds. Measure twice and all that, but also factor in that it always takes longer than you think.

Should be fine if you take your time
Measure twice, post once

The terms and conditions usually tell a different story. Cheers for sharing that. :P

Totally

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

I know people will disagree, but espresso machines are rarely "reliable" in the home sense.

They can be amazing, but between maintenance, pressure issues, and scale buildup, you're basically adopting a small needy appliance that requires emotional commitment

Steady Dylan

If we're talking long-term reliability, commercial-grade drip machines win.

They're not sexy, but there's a reason offices and diners use them for years without replacement

Ridge

If we're talking pure reliability in 2026, I still think the boring answer wins: a well-maintained drip machine from someone like Technivorm or Moccamaster style builds.

People chase fancy app-controlled machines, but the truth is the simpler the mechanism, the fewer things that break. Heating element, water flow, done. No firmware updates required
sudo make me a sandwich

Q

Honestly, the most reliable coffee maker is the one you can fully clean without a YouTube tutorial.

I've had "smart" machines that started tasting weird after a year because you basically needed an engineering degree to descale them properly. Simplicity wins

Hannah

We need to separate "reliable" from "convenient".

A pod machine is insanely consistent and low effort, but you're locked into pods and eventual long-term cost. A manual method is reliable but requires more attention

Finley_19

I had a high-end machine once that broke right after warranty expired.

Since then I've gone full minimalist and honestly my stress level has dropped more than my caffeine intake
It's only banter... mostly

Tel86

The real answer is: it depends on how patient you are with cleaning.

Even the best machine will become unreliable if you ignore descaling. Most "bad machines" are actually "bad maintenance habits" in disguise

Sequence87

Hot take: French press is still undefeated for reliability.

No electronics, no pump, no nonsense. Just hot water and ground coffee. If it breaks, it's because you dropped it, not because some sensor decided it was tired

GoldbergFan86

I switched to a basic Breville drip machine years ago and never looked back.

It's not glamorous, but it works every morning at 6:30 without drama. That's more valuable than any café-style frother wizardry

Arty Leah

I still think Moka pot deserves more respect in these discussions.

People act like it's old-school, but mine has lasted longer than any electric machine I've owned, and it still makes stronger coffee than half the cafes near me

My unpopular opinion is that the best coffee maker is the one you don't overthink.

People spend weeks researching machines and forget that 90% of coffee quality comes from beans, grind, and water quality

Delulu

At the end of the day, the most reliable coffee maker is your local café if you live within walking distance.

Zero maintenance, consistent results, and someone else handles the cleaning
