Wanted a proper answer rather than another generic guide.

Real world performance is what matters, not benchmark numbers.

The obvious route might be right but I wanted to check before committing to it.

I would rather have a qualified answer that acknowledges uncertainty than a confident one that turns out to be wrong. :(

I have had mixed results with that approach. Most people skip the diagnostic step and go straight to reinstalling things unnecessarily.

Should sort it if the basics are fine.

I always check startup items and background processes first.

Same thing happened to me. Might go back to it.

An SSD upgrade is still the single biggest performance gain on most older machines. ;D
