Thinking about getting a keyboard for my iPad. Are they actually worth it or just hype?

StringTheory83

If you type anything more than quick replies, they are worth it. The iPad without a keyboard is fine for browsing and media, but as soon as you start writing longer posts or emails, it gets frustrating fast.

What is the best keyboard for iPad overall?

If you want the closest thing to a laptop experience, go with Apple's own keyboard. It is expensive, but the typing and trackpad feel are on another level compared to cheaper options.

Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Air (5th Generation)

This is what you buy if you want your iPad to actually replace a laptop for typing tasks.

Is there a cheaper alternative that is still good?

Yes, Logitech is usually the best middle ground. You get solid build quality and a good typing experience without paying Apple prices.

Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard Case for iPad Air

This is a safer choice if you want quality but do not want to overspend.

They work, but you get what you pay for. The typing can feel cramped, build quality is basic, and sometimes there is input lag. Fine for light use, not great if you type a lot.

ProCase iPad Air Keyboard Case

Good enough for occasional use, but not something you will enjoy using daily.

Do I need a keyboard if I already have a laptop?

No. If your iPad is mainly for media, reading, or casual browsing, a keyboard is optional. It only makes sense if you plan to do real typing on it.

So are iPad keyboards worth it in 2026?

Yes, but only if you actually use them. If you type regularly, they are one of the best upgrades you can buy. If not, skip it and spend the money elsewhere.

Apple keyboards give the best experience but cost the most.
Logitech offers a strong balance between price and quality.
Cheap keyboard cases are fine for light use but not ideal for heavy typing.
Keyboards are only worth buying if you actually plan to type regularly.

That matches what the more reliable sources are saying. I will keep following it.

I tried that and hit a problem at the second stage. Once you do something once yourself you always know you can do it again.

That is pretty much what I took from it too. I try to find two or three different sources before forming a proper view on something like this.

Worth keeping an eye on.

Not sure about that part. That lines up with what I found.

Useful to know.
