I haven't really posted much about Apple products before, but I've been looking into upgrading and ended up comparing the whole iPhone 17 lineup.

These are the ones I've been looking at (all 256GB):

Apple iPhone 17 256GB
Apple iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max 256GB
Apple iPhone 17e 256GB
Apple iPhone Air 256GB

There are quite a few options now:

standard iPhone 17
Pro
Pro Max
the new Air model
and the 17e as a cheaper option

On paper it looks like a strong lineup, but I'm struggling to work out how much of it is actually meaningful vs just small upgrades.

The standard iPhone 17 now has a smoother display and feels more "complete" than older base models.

The Pro models seem to focus more on camera and performance, but I'm not sure how noticeable that is in everyday use.

The Pro Max looks like it's mainly about battery and screen size rather than anything drastically different.

The Air is interesting, but I'm not convinced thinner automatically means better, especially if it impacts battery.

And the 17e looks like a good price entry point, but I'm wondering if it cuts too many corners long term.

So I'm curious what people think.

Is the iPhone 17 lineup:

actually worth upgrading to
or more of a minor refresh

Also:

is Pro worth it over the standard model
is Pro Max worth it over Pro
does anyone actually see a real use for the Air

Would be good to hear real experiences, not just spec comparisons

I went with the standard iPhone 17 and it's honestly enough.

Biggest difference for me was the smoother screen. Feels nicer to use overall.

Didn't feel like I needed the Pro this time

QuantumDay

Pro only really makes sense if you care about camera.

For normal use, the standard model does pretty much everything the same
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)

codeberg

Pro Max is all about battery.

If you want longer battery life, it's worth it.

Otherwise it's just a bigger phone

Totally

Not convinced by the Air.

Nice idea, but I'd rather have better battery than a thinner phone. 17e looks good price wise, but I'd probably stretch to the standard 17 just for longevity.

Feels like it'll last longer
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

I don't know, I had a different experience. For me the sign of a good game is when I am still thinking about it when I am not playing it.

Good shout. :'(

Feels like the right read on it. From what I have seen the gap between headlines and reality is still pretty wide.

Worth keeping an eye on

There is a bit more to it than that I think. I always check temperatures and disk health first before anything else.

Start there and see if it makes a difference

QuantumKnight

That is pretty much what I took from it too. I find the financial angle of any big story is usually the most underreported part.

Worth watching closely

That tends to work on clean installs but real machines are messier. A lot of guides overcomplicate it, usually one or two sensible changes do most of the work.

Happy to help further if you get stuck

VB

Cannot really disagree with that. The price matters more than it used to, I am much more selective about what I buy full price.

Might go back to it

No real argument from me on that. Injuries change everything and people forget to factor that in.

Time will tell on this one

Hmm, not convinced. Fair enough really.

Ha, fair enough. ;D

JayJ

Turned out alright in the end doing it that way. Measure twice and all that, but also factor in that it always takes longer than you think.

Turned out alright when I did it

ArVeeDee

That is how I do it and it works. Worth a look if you have not already. :P

That is pretty much it. Appreciate it

QuoteGood point. Appreciate the discussion.

I got to the same conclusion a different way but yes. I keep a list of what I do to every fresh install so I can repeat it without thinking.

That is the sensible starting point

Makes sense. That is just how it is.

Cannot really disagree with that. Some games you just know within an hour whether they are going to hold you.

Can't really go wrong with it. :)

Turned out alright in the end doing it that way. The materials are usually a smaller cost than the tools you need to work with them.

Good luck with it

I upgraded from a 13 to a 17 Pro recently and the difference is actually pretty wild in real life use
The screen brightness, camera night mode, and general speed all feel noticeably better

It's not just benchmarks either, it's those small everyday things like unlocking speed and app switching that make it feel smoother
So I'd say older phone users will definitely feel it more than they expect

I think the iPhone 17 lineup sits in that awkward but good spot where it's not revolutionary but still very polished
Apple seems to have fully settled into refinement mode rather than big yearly shocks

So is it worth it? For most people, only if your current phone is starting to feel slow or the battery is degrading
Otherwise, it's more of a "nice to have" than a "need to have" upgrade
Always open to a good discussion

Glenn82

I think the upgrade question always depends on what you're coming from
If you're on a 14 or older, the iPhone 17 lineup will feel like a huge leap in performance, battery life, and display smoothness

But if you already have a 15 or 16, you're mostly paying for refinements rather than anything life changing
Still, those refinements do add up in day to day use more than people give credit for

I'll be the contrarian here and say no phone is ever really "worth" upgrading every year
The iPhone 17 is good, no doubt, but the 15 and 16 are still more than capable for almost everything

The only people who really benefit from yearly upgrades are reviewers, developers, or people who just enjoy having the newest tech
For everyone else, stretching upgrades to every 2 to 3 years is the sweet spot

HeartbreakKid_Fan

What I like about the 17 series is that Apple seems to be leaning harder into efficiency rather than just raw specs
Battery improvements alone are worth considering if you're someone who hates carrying chargers around

Also the new chip apparently handles AI tasks on-device much better, which might matter more as apps get smarter over the next year
So it's less about today and more about future-proofing your phone a bit

Sinead

I've been using the iPhone 16 Pro for a while now and honestly the jump to the 17 lineup doesn't feel as dramatic as people expect
Apple has gotten really good at smoothing out upgrades so each year feels incremental rather than revolutionary

That said, the new camera system on the 17 Pro models does look like a genuine step up if you care about photography or content creation
For casual users though, I'd say it's more of a comfort upgrade than a must-have

MondayMoan31

The funniest part of iPhone upgrade discussions is how people always try to justify or argue it like it's a financial decision only
At the end of the day, for a lot of users it's also just a lifestyle choice or hobby

If you enjoy tech and use your phone heavily every day, the 17 lineup is a nice upgrade
If not, you're not missing out on anything essential, just incremental improvements
