Analysis links AI to 88,000 US job cuts in 2026, more than all prior years combined

[Daresh84]

An analysis cited this week found AI was behind 88,000 US job cuts in 2026, reportedly more than all prior years combined. The most exposed group is entry level knowledge workers in support, content, and administrative roles. That concentration at the bottom of the ladder is the part that should give everyone pause

There is a nasty psychological wrinkle in the data. The workers most at risk, junior knowledge workers, are correct that their roles as a group face high automation risk, but they rate their own personal job loss probability much lower. That optimism gap makes it harder for people to prepare

The retraining story is not encouraging either. A study of 23 million participants in federal workforce programs found that retraining rarely placed workers into genuinely less automation exposed jobs. So the standard policy answer of just retrain everyone runs into the reality that the safer jobs are also getting automated

My honest take is that the entry level squeeze is the sleeper crisis of this whole boom. If you gut the bottom rung, you break the pipeline that produces senior people later. Companies optimizing away junior roles today may find themselves short on experienced talent in a decade. This is the human cost side of all the compute and capital stories in the other threads
