Dyson's pet beauty range was the one that got me because the branding looked completely plausible. A dog hair dryer, fancy grooming tools, and a product page written with total seriousness is exactly the sort of thing Dyson would launch after deciding normal vacuum cleaners were too predictable.

The worst part is that I would probably buy the imaginary pet gadget if it existed. My cat already has better grooming standards than I do.

Yahoo's anti-doomscrolling device was a great idea because it targeted a real problem with a gloriously silly solution. A physical object stopping you from endlessly refreshing bad news feels like something a tired engineer would genuinely build at 2am.

The joke worked because the product was only slightly more ridiculous than the real wellness gadgets people already buy. Add a tiny screen showing your daily scrolling total and it becomes a genuine business by lunchtime.
