Apple TV Plus dropped the season 4 trailer for Slow Horses this month. Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb remains one of the great television performances of the current era. The show, based on Mick Herron's Slough House novels, follows the failures and rejects of MI5 who get a second chance through the cases nobody else wants to take.

The show has been quietly excellent for four seasons and is structurally more intelligent than anything else currently on television in the spy genre. If you have not watched it the trailer is the place to start and the first episode will do the rest.

Gary Oldman deserves every award that exists for this performance. Jackson Lamb is a character of extraordinary depth played with complete commitment

The Americans is the comparison people reach for. Both shows understand that spy fiction is really about institutional failure and moral compromise

Mick Herron's source novels are worth reading alongside the show. The books and the series are different enough to be complementary rather than redundant

Apple TV Plus has an extraordinary back catalogue at this point. Slow Horses, Severance, For All Mankind. The prestige television argument for the platform is strong

The fact that this show does not dominate award season in the way lesser productions do is the most reliable evidence that award season is broken

Season four picking up where three left off is going to require some context if you have not been following. The show rewards marathon viewing before each new season
I read every reply. Even the bad ones.

The mundane setting of the Slough House office contrasted with the genuinely dangerous situations is where the show finds its tension. The anti-glamour is the point

If you have been putting this off because spy shows are not usually your genre this is the one to make an exception for

Kristin Scott Thomas and Jonathan Pryce in supporting roles that would be career-defining performances in a lesser show. That is the level of cast this series has assembled
