IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman trilogy, releases 007 First Light on May 27 and the story trailer that dropped this week has generated significant excitement. The game follows a young James Bond before he receives his 00 status, set in the late 1990s. The Hitman games featured some of the best-designed levels in the medium and the Bond setting is a natural fit for that design philosophy.

The gameplay is being described as social stealth with gunplay and the trailer shows enough of the tone to confirm this feels like a Bond game rather than a generic action game wearing a Bond suit.

ISA maxed. Costs minimised.

IO Interactive making a Bond game is the most logical creative matchup of the decade. The Hitman design philosophy maps perfectly onto Bond mission structure

Social stealth as a mechanic in a Bond game is exactly right. Bond's toolkit is as much about disguise and manipulation as it is about shooting

BradBytheway

A young Bond before the 00 status is the correct creative choice. Origin stories in game form work better than in film form and the 90s setting adds texture

Cheugy

The Hitman levels were some of the best game design of the last decade. If this maintains even half that quality in terms of how missions can be approached it will be exceptional
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

May 27 is a strong release date. After Forza Horizon 6 and Subnautica 2 this month but before the summer blockbuster game season

Sparrow

The tone in the trailer walks the line between serious and playful that defines the best Bond films. Neither gritty reboot nor camp

Bussin

IO chose to make a new Bond rather than adapt an existing film story and that creative freedom is what will make or break it

ScarletDaemon

The 1990s setting before Bond was culturally defined by Daniel Craig's iteration gives the game room to be its own thing
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

Just here for the craic :)
