Marvel Studios used a Shanghai stop this week to give fans their first real look at Avengers: Doomsday ahead of the film's actual trailer debut, with leaked booth photos revealing glimpses of Doom's throne room and the X-Mansion. On stage, Marvel chief Kevin Feige teased that Yelena will appear a little bit sooner than expected, pointing toward the upcoming Brand New Day, and confirmed the next X-Men film will land only after Secret Wars, the sequel following Doomsday

The film itself, out December 18 after being pushed back from its original May 2026 date, centers on Robert Downey Jr's genuinely audacious return to the MCU, not as Tony Stark but as the villain Victor Von Doom. Downey has been publicly framing the role as the antidote to Marvel's post Endgame slump, and has reportedly called playing Doom the best hero and best villain he's ever gotten to play, in the same breath

Directed once again by the Russo brothers, who helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Doomsday is shaping up as the largest ensemble cast Marvel has ever assembled, blending the Avengers with characters from Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and, for the first time, the X-Men films, with several original X-Men stars reportedly returning to the franchise after years away. Confirmed names include Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Vanessa Kirby, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd and Sebastian Stan among a genuinely sprawling roster

With all signs now pointing to San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H as the venue for the actual first trailer, following the Shanghai teaser and new artwork putting Cyclops front and center, Marvel appears to be building toward a marketing rollout designed to make Doomsday feel like the true successor to Endgame, right down to reuniting the directing team that made that film the genre defining event it became
Still figuring it all out

Downey playing both the best hero and best villain in the same franchise is such a wild flex, curious how audiences actually respond once they see him fully in the Doom costume rather than just concept art

Bringing back the Russo brothers specifically for this feels like a deliberate signal that Marvel wants this to recapture the exact energy of Endgame rather than just be another crossover event

The X-Men not showing up until after Secret Wars despite being teased so heavily now is an interesting structural choice, keeps the anticipation building across two more movies instead of resolving it all at once
