Blade Runner finally gets a live-action TV series, and the trailer confirms replicants have taken over

[Nomad22]

Prime Video revealed the premiere date and first teaser trailer for Blade Runner 2099 at its San Diego Comic-Con panel, marking the franchise's first ever live-action television series after nearly five years of development. All eight episodes will premiere globally on November 25, set 50 years after the events of 2017's Blade Runner 2049. The official logline says Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity, with the trailer hinting that replicants have become the dominant societal force and some kind of war took place sometime after the events of 2049

Hunter Schafer stars as Cora, a fugitive who takes on the identity of a Blade Runner in what the synopsis calls a final bid to stop running, while Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant grappling with the end of her life who Cora reluctantly teams up with to find a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city. Silka Luisa, who previously made Apple TV Plus's Shining Girls, serves as showrunner, with original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott on board as an executive producer

The trailer leans hard into cyberpunk visuals with strong effects work, though it stays light on specific plot details beyond the core setup. This is being positioned as a limited series rather than an ongoing show, meaning it could be a self-contained eight episode story rather than the start of a multi-season commitment

Nine years since Blade Runner 2049 and finally getting more of this world in live action feels like a long time coming, hope it was worth the wait

[Badger90]

Hunter Schafer and Michelle Yeoh is an exciting pairing on paper, curious how their dynamic actually plays out across a full season

[DarkFreddy65]

Silka Luisa doing Shining Girls before this bodes well, that show had a real handle on disorienting, layered storytelling

[Red Wrench]

Replicants becoming the dominant societal force is a big swing for the franchise, curious how they justify that shift happening in just 50 years

[Dom0]

Limited series framing makes sense for this kind of prestige sci-fi property, keeps the story tight rather than stretching it out for multiple seasons

[Vector]

Ridley Scott as an EP rather than director means this is really Luisa's vision, which feels like the right call for a story pushing the world in new directions

[NovaPrime68]

Excited but cautiously so, this franchise has such a high bar after both films, a lot riding on the writing living up to the visuals

[Griffin39]

The war between 2049 and 2099 that the trailer hints at but doesn't explain is going to be the thing everyone speculates about until premiere

[Andy99]

Eight episodes dropping all at once on November 25 rather than a weekly rollout is an interesting choice for a show this visually dense

[Bayley_US]

Cyberpunk done right is such a specific visual language and this trailer looks like it nails that tone completely
