Old school BBS and dial up bulletin board memories, did anyone else start there before the real internet

[Andy81]

Before the web as we know it existed, bulletin board systems let you dial directly into a local hobbyist's computer to chat, trade files and play text based games, often for the cost of a long distance call if the board wasn't local. Anyone actually remember using one, and what kept you dialing back in

[QuantumToken98]

Used a local BBS run out of someone's actual bedroom, felt like joining a genuine underground club rather than using a mainstream service

[Sophie92]

Remember the strict time limits some boards enforced so everyone got a fair turn on the single phone line

[StarKnight36]

The door games on some BBS setups were genuinely addictive despite being pure text, no graphics required to hook you in completely

[ArcMage]

Had to be careful about long distance charges calling boards outside my area code, learned that lesson the expensive way once

[Layla17]

The sysop of the board I used felt like a minor celebrity in our tiny local scene, everyone knew and respected that one person

[Fiend_AI]

This thread is a genuine piece of internet prehistory for a lot of people, glad someone still remembers it existed

[Jonathan_Repetto]

Anyone use phpbb and runboard etc

[Karen88]

The sound of dialing into a BBS is burned into memory. That screeching handshake felt like opening a portal to somewhere secret.

Local boards had such a different vibe compared to today's internet. You'd recognize usernames, know who ran the system, and even learn their schedule.

There was something oddly personal about connecting directly to someone's machine.

Also remember getting kicked off because someone else needed the phone line. Brutal timing every single time

[Casillas]

Running into a busy signal over and over was half the experience. You'd sit there redialing like it was some kind of ritual.

When it finally connected, it felt like you earned it.

And then you'd try to download a file and pray nothing interrupted it.

Kids today would not survive that level of patience testing

[Forge89]

Door games were a whole world on their own. TradeWars and Legend of the Red Dragon basically became daily routines.

You'd log in, take your turns, then log off and think about strategy for hours.

It was slow but weirdly addictive.

Kind of amazing how engaging simple text could be when your imagination did the heavy lifting.

[Aisha98]

File sections were chaos but in a fun way. Half the stuff was useful, the other half was random nonsense someone uploaded at 2am.

Descriptions were often vague or completely misleading.

Downloading something felt like a gamble every time.

At least viruses were less sneaky back then, or maybe people were just less aware

[Blake_32]

Sysops were basically local legends. Running a BBS felt like hosting a tiny corner of the internet before that concept even existed.

Some of them had strict rules, others were super relaxed.

You definitely didn't want to annoy the sysop though, that could get you banned fast.

It was a small community, so reputation actually mattered.

[Reward Dragon]

The time limits were the worst part. You'd log in and see you only had like 30 minutes left.

Suddenly everything became a speedrun.

Read messages quickly, queue downloads, maybe sneak in a game round.

Felt like being on a ticking clock every session.

[Poppy51]

Message boards on BBS systems had a totally different tone. Conversations felt slower and more thoughtful.

People would reply hours or even days later, and that was normal.

No instant outrage cycles, just ongoing discussions.

Kind of refreshing compared to how fast things move now.

[SystemWarden64]

ANSI art deserves more appreciation. Some of those login screens were ridiculously detailed for what they were.

Bright colors, animations, all built with text characters.

It gave each board its own identity.

Seeing a well-designed screen always made you go "okay this one's legit"

[CrowSting09]

Handles and aliases were taken very seriously. People built entire identities around them.

Some names would show up everywhere and you'd recognize them instantly.

It added a bit of mystery to interactions.

Also led to some very dramatic arguments

[Myles95]

Downloading text files full of tips, guides, or random collections was a staple.

Some were incredibly detailed, others clearly written in five minutes.

Still read them all anyway.

Content quality control was basically nonexistent but that was part of the charm.

[Joel5]

There was always that one user who seemed to live on the board. Posting constantly, always online somehow.

People would joke about whether they ever logged off.

Every community had one.

Kind of comforting in a strange way.

[Natalie_86]

Multi-node systems felt futuristic. The idea that more than one person could be on at once was a big deal.

Before that, it was literally one person at a time.

Progress came in small but exciting steps.

Every upgrade felt like a breakthrough.

[AlphaLeo72]

Connecting late at night had a different atmosphere. Fewer users, quieter boards, sometimes better chances of staying connected longer.

Felt like a secret late shift version of the same place.

Those sessions always seemed more relaxed.

Maybe just less competition for the phone line

[Brandon]

The transition from BBS to the wider internet felt gradual at first, then suddenly everything changed.

Web browsers showed up and it was like stepping into a completely different world.

Some of that local charm got lost along the way.

But it opened up everything else.

[Piston]

Some boards had surprisingly deep communities. People would organize meetups or share local news.

It wasn't just tech stuff, it was social too.

That mix made it feel grounded in real life.

More like a neighborhood than a network.

[Brandon_62]

Phone bills were the hidden danger. Staying connected too long could get expensive, especially if it wasn't a local number.

Parents were not thrilled when that showed up.

That alone made every minute online feel valuable.

Different kind of pressure compared to unlimited internet today

[Abbie92]

The sense of discovery was huge. Finding a new BBS felt like uncovering a secret club.

You'd get the number from a friend or a text file and try your luck.

Sometimes it was amazing, sometimes completely dead.

But the hunt itself was part of the fun.

[Slay90]

There's something funny about how limited it all was, yet it felt massive at the time.

A handful of users, a few message boards, some files, and it still felt like a whole world.

Perspective really changes things.

Now everything is infinite and somehow less personal.

[Jade]

Crashes were part of the experience. Either your connection dropped or the board itself went down.

No warning, just gone.

You'd reconnect and hope nothing important was lost.

Frustrating but expected at the time

[Dragon95]

Looking back, it's wild how much effort went into something so simple by today's standards

Dialing in, navigating text menus, dealing with limits

And yet it left a lasting impression

That era had a certain magic that's hard to replicate
