Canada based BTQ Technologies and Taiwans Industrial Technology Research Institute have completed the first milestone in a multi year program to validate a new chip architecture specifically designed to accelerate post quantum cryptography in hardware, successfully testing it within a TSMC 28 nanometer design environment

The architecture, called Quantum Compute in Memory or QCIM, is being developed as part of a broader chip roadmap led by BTQ alongside ICTK, the core concept is genuinely clever, rather than the conventional approach of shuttling data back and forth between separate processing and memory components, QCIM performs cryptographic operations directly inside the memory subsystem itself, which is specifically intended to reduce data movement, latency and power consumption, all genuinely important considerations for the kind of compact, battery constrained devices this technology is ultimately meant to serve

The first phase of testing focused on validating the QCIM core under demanding operating conditions, and the results were genuinely solid, the architecture accurately and efficiently accelerated cryptographic operations tied to three separate NIST standardized post quantum algorithms, specifically FIPS 203, 204 and 205, while maintaining functional correctness throughout, BTQ describes QCIM as a soft IP cryptographic accelerator capable of supporting both conventional and post quantum cryptographic functions in a compact, low power design, and critically its being built to be crypto agile, meaning it can support additional or different algorithms as security requirements and standards continue to evolve over time rather than locking hardware to one fixed cryptographic approach

This is genuinely a three way collaboration playing to each partners specific strengths, BTQ contributes the underlying cryptographic architecture, ICTK brings secure semiconductor design and physical unclonable function capabilities, meaning hardware that generates unique unclonable digital fingerprints for device authentication, and ITRI contributes semiconductor design, integration and validation expertise, BTQ CEO and chairman Olivier Roussy Newton said the results demonstrate the architecture can accurately and efficiently accelerate multiple NIST standardized post quantum cryptographic algorithms under demanding conditions while maintaining the flexibility required to respond to evolving security standards

The companies say this reduces technical uncertainty around the QCIM architecture and provides a genuine foundation for the next phase, module level integration, verification and validation, examining how the QCIM core can be incorporated into larger chip and system architectures while maintaining performance, interoperability and functional correctness, the target applications span military systems, industrial equipment, automotive technology, IoT devices, physical AI and other connected infrastructure where long term security, device authentication and efficient cryptographic processing genuinely matter, BTQ expects to ship test chips to selected customers and strategic partners by the end of the year for further performance and functional validation

Performing cryptographic operations directly inside the memory subsystem rather than shuttling data back and forth is a genuinely clever architectural choice specifically for the power and latency constraints of edge devices, thats not just a theoretical optimization, it directly addresses real deployment limitations
Not financial advice. Not medical advice. Just vibes.

Crypto agility being built in from the start is the detail that matters most for long term viability here, post quantum cryptography standards are still genuinely evolving, hardware locked to one fixed algorithm risks becoming obsolete the moment NIST updates or adds new standards

Physical unclonable functions from ICTK adding hardware level device authentication on top of the cryptographic acceleration is a smart complementary capability, gives this a genuinely broader security value proposition beyond just faster post quantum crypto operations

28 nanometer TSMC process is a mature and cost effective node rather than chasing the bleeding edge, smart choice for a first validation phase since it reduces manufacturing risk while still proving the core architecture works under real world conditions

Shipping test chips to customers and partners by end of year is a concrete near term milestone that will actually test whether this architecture holds up outside the controlled validation environment, that real world feedback loop matters a lot for a technology this early stage

Reducing technical uncertainty is a nicely honest way to frame a first validation milestone rather than overselling it as a finished product, this is genuinely early stage progress on a multi year roadmap, worth tracking how the module level integration phase goes next
