The timeline is the part that worries me. People keep talking about large fault-tolerant quantum computers as if they are decades away by default, but the correct response is not to wait and see.

Encryption upgrades are slow because nobody can just press a button and replace every system overnight. Banks, governments and companies have huge amounts of old infrastructure running in the background. Preparing early makes sense :)

The threat is real, but some headlines make it sound like someone will wake up tomorrow and crack every website password on Earth. That is not how it works.

The bigger concern is data being stolen today and stored until quantum systems become capable enough to decrypt it later. Sensitive information has a long shelf life, so organisations need to think ahead.

Post-quantum cryptography is becoming important for exactly this reason. The goal is not to stop quantum computers, but to build encryption methods that can survive them.

It is similar to updating software before a vulnerability becomes a disaster. Waiting until the attack is happening is usually the worst possible strategy.

There is a lot of fear around this topic, but some scepticism is healthy. Every major technology shift gets a wave of dramatic predictions, and quantum computing has had plenty of hype already.

That said, dismissing the risk completely is a mistake. Security changes take years, so starting early is the sensible approach.
