Most people only think about backups after they lose something. A dead hard drive, a stolen laptop or a phone dropped in the sea, and suddenly years of photos and documents are gone. The trouble is that backup advice can feel overwhelming, with talk of the 3-2-1 rule, cloud sync, image backups and versioning. So let's simplify it

If someone does just one thing, what should it be? Automatic cloud backup of phone photos is easy and covers what most people care about most. An external drive with a scheduled backup protects everything on a computer. Others would say testing a restore matters more than anything, since a backup you cannot restore is useless

There is also an argument for keeping one copy offline, away from ransomware and accidental deletion. Sync services are not the same as backups, because if you delete a file, it disappears everywhere. That catches a lot of people out

Vote for the habit you would recommend to a friend who currently backs up nothing. Horror stories about lost files are welcome too, as warnings for the rest of us
