Noticed this pattern across pretty much every sport, upsets happen way more in single elimination formats than over a full league season, why is that exactly?

A league season is designed to average out luck over many games, so the genuinely best team usually rises to the top over 30 or 40 matches. A single knockout game is a much smaller sample, meaning a worse team just has to have one good day rather than sustain quality over months
