England came through a genuinely entertaining Group F opener on June 17, beating Croatia 4-2 in a game that was a lot more open than most of us expected from a Southgate-era England side. Croatia twice got back into it before England pulled clear, so this was not the usual nervy 1-0

The headline though is Harry Kane, who scored to draw level with Gary Lineker on the all time England World Cup scoring list. For a player who gets endless stick about big tournament knockouts, quietly matching Lineker on the biggest stage is the kind of milestone that ages very well

What struck me watching it was how leaky England looked at the back even while winning comfortably going forward. Conceding twice to a Croatia side that is past its golden generation peak is going to worry people once the knockouts arrive

Still, four goals and three points to open a World Cup on home-ish soil is a fine start. Group F suddenly looks like England's to lose, and Kane chasing the outright record over the next few games is a proper story to follow

Kane equalling Lineker and people STILL find a way to moan about him. Mad

Four goals great but we cannot defend like that against Spain or Argentina and expect to survive

Croatia are not what they were. Modric basically retired from this stage. Let us not get carried away off one result

Genuinely thought this was one of the more watchable England games in years. Actual attacking football
