Thomas Tuchel announces the official 26-man England World Cup squad on Friday morning but the leaks overnight have confirmed the big calls. Cole Palmer is out despite scoring in the Euro 2024 final. Phil Foden is out after an inconsistent season for City. Harry Maguire is out and publicly gutted. Morgan Gibbs-White finished as the highest-scoring English player in the Premier League with 14 goals and is also out.

In: Ivan Toney recall from Al-Ahli. Noni Madueke. Kobbie Mainoo. Tino Livramento. Luke Shaw and Fikayo Tomori also potentially missing. Ollie Watkins surely in after his Europa League form.

Palmer, Foden, Maguire out; Toney in England World Cup squad - sources

Palmer being left out after scoring in the Euros final is the call that needs the most explanation. Tuchel owes us a proper answer on that one at the press conference

Gibbs-White finishing as top scoring English player in the league and not making the squad is the one that genuinely baffles me. What does a player have to do

Shane

Toney is interesting. He went to Saudi and kept scoring. Tuchel is picking form and fitness over reputation which is actually the right approach even if the specific decisions hurt

Courier53

Maguire being shocked is a bit much from him honestly. He has not been at his best for two years and everyone knew this was coming

The Colwill exclusion after just coming back from an ACL injury is defensible. The Palmer exclusion is not. Different category entirely

Sequence

Madueke is a fine player and his Arsenal form has been good but picking him over Palmer feels like a statement rather than a decision

Aisha

Watkins absolutely has to be in after last night. Tuchel would be making a massive mistake if he leaves out the Europa League final squad top scorer

StringTheory95

England going to a World Cup without Palmer and Foden is a real creative loss in midfield and attack. We need to know what Tuchel's plan B is

Mainoo inclusion is the one I am genuinely excited about. He has been the most mature midfielder in English football for two years and the World Cup stage suits him

QuietNomad

Livramento at right back is a bold pick and probably the right one. Walker is finished at international level and someone had to replace him
