Short stories often get less attention than novels, but some of the finest writing in English comes in short form. A great short story can be read in one sitting and stay with you for years. Yet many brilliant short story writers are barely known outside literary circles. Let's change that a little

There are some famous names, like Anton Chekhov, Alice Munro, Raymond Carver, Ray Bradbury, Roald Dahl and Edgar Allan Poe. But there are also plenty of writers who are less well known, either because they wrote mainly in short form or because their work was overshadowed. Science fiction, horror and crime have huge short story traditions too, with many anthologies full of hidden gems. Anthologies are a great way to discover new names

I would love to see recommendations for writers who deserve more readers. Classic or contemporary, famous in one country but unknown here, or a favourite from a magazine or anthology. Please tell us a little about their style and which story is a good starting point

For me, it is Saki, the pen name of H. H. Munro. His stories from the early twentieth century are sharp, funny and often quietly cruel, mocking Edwardian society with a wicked sense of humour. The Open Window is the perfect place to start. It is only a few pages long and has one of the best final lines in English

Which short story writer deserves far more readers, and where should we start?
