The Quantum Insider ran a proper careers guide this week and it is unusually honest about timelines, so I wanted to open it up here for anyone eyeing a pivot. The one number that stops you, the global pure play quantum workforce hit around 16,500 people in 2025, up 2,000 in a single year, and job postings grew roughly 180 percent between 2020 and 2024 while the qualified applicant pool did not keep pace. That scarcity is exactly what drives the salaries and the openings

The guide is refreshing because it refuses to pretend every path is the same length. Quantum error correction is the narrowest and longest road, an estimated 1,800 to 2,200 specialists worldwide against a need for many thousands by 2030, with training that can take up to a decade at the specialist level. Entry QEC engineers earn 150 to 210 thousand rising to 300 to 400 thousand senior, but it is a poor target if you want to be employed inside 18 months from a standing start

The accessible door for most people is quantum software engineering. Strong computer science fundamentals, solid Python, some C++ or Rust, and familiarity with frameworks like Qiskit, Cirq or PennyLane, and crucially it is the one path a classical software engineer can transition into through self study and portfolio work in roughly 12 to 18 months without a PhD. Hardware and QEC simply cannot be compressed that way, they gate on lab access and coursework

The bit I appreciated most is the refusal to sell a fixed month one to month eighteen ladder. Three things decide how long it takes, your starting background, the daily hours you actually invest, and consistency, and two people with identical goals can honestly take six months or three years and both be doing it right. The advice is a sequence of phases, foundations, specialisation, then networking, not a schedule

So the thread is for anyone in or eyeing this field. Is the software path really as open as the guide claims for a decent classical developer, is the PhD worth it or does it just delay your entry by five years without a proportionate payoff, and for those already in quantum, what does the guide get wrong about actually getting hired?

The software path is genuinely as open as they say, source, did it. Strong Python plus a real Qiskit portfolio plus turning up in the community got me interviews with no PhD in about a year of evenings

It is open but do not undersell the linear algebra wall, a classical dev who cannot comfortably do the maths will stall in month two no matter how good their software chops are. The prerequisite is real

PhD delays entry by five years without proportionate payoff for software and applications roles, and that is the whole answer for most people reading this. Do the PhD if you want research or hardware, not as a ticket

Counter view from inside a hardware team, the PhD is not a delay if hardware IS the goal, it is the actual training, you cannot self study cryogenics and fabrication in your bedroom. The advice only holds for the software track

The up to a decade for QEC specialists number scared me until I realised it means the shortage is permanent for a generation, which if you are already a physics postdoc is the best job security in tech

What the guide gets right that nobody says out loud, the community is tiny and hiring runs on being visible in it. Half these roles never hit a job board, they go to whoever was active in the Slack and at the hackathons

Applications scientist is the sleeper path for career switchers and it barely gets mentioned in these threads, if you already have pharma or finance domain expertise you layer quantum on top rather than starting over

Salaries look eye watering until you remember they are mostly US Boston and Bay Area numbers running 25 to 40 percent above national average, adjust hard before you quit your job on the strength of a table

The most useful line in the whole guide is asking whether the people currently doing your target role have PhDs, that one question kills more bad five year plans than any careers advisor

Consistency resetting the clock is the quiet killer, I restarted the self taught path three times over two years and effectively made zero progress until I just picked one track and stopped hopping
