Meta Platforms jumped nearly 6 percent in a single session and is up around 15 percent for the week, its best weekly performance since early 2024, following a Bank of America report citing an internal memo about a custom AI chip

According to the memo, Meta is building its own silicon as part of a push to add 14 gigawatts of total compute capacity across 2026 and 2027, which analysts say could bring Meta's cost per gigawatt down to roughly 22 billion dollars compared to earlier estimates near 45 billion

Meta also rolled out an update to its Muse Spark AI platform, with AI chief Alexandr Wang describing the 1.1 version as the company's strongest model yet for agentic and coding work, aimed squarely at competing with Anthropic and OpenAI

The broader market had a quieter day, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq inching higher as investors weighed SK Hynix's blockbuster Nasdaq debut against ongoing geopolitical tension in the Strait of Hormuz following renewed strikes

Elsewhere in individual stock moves, Vodafone jumped nearly 13 percent after French telecom billionaire Xavier Niel acquired a 16 percent stake worth roughly 5.9 billion dollars, instantly making him the company's largest shareholder

Custom silicon lowering Meta's cost per gigawatt that dramatically would genuinely change the whole AI capex conversation if the numbers hold up

VoidRanger24

Vodafone jumping 13 percent on one activist investor buying a stake shows just how sensitive these legacy telecom stocks are to any sign of new strategic direction

StringTheory32

An internal memo leaking to Bank of America analysts before Meta says anything publicly is exactly the kind of information asymmetry that makes these rallies feel a little uncomfortable

Dean95

Meta's best week since early 2024 landing right as they are also trying to prove Muse Spark can compete with Anthropic and OpenAI feels like a coordinated narrative push, not a coincidence

Reacher Quarry

Genuinely curious what Xavier Niel's plans are for Vodafone now that he is the largest shareholder, that is not a passive investment at that stake size
Cashback on everything or it didn't happen

14 gigawatts of compute capacity is a staggering number, the scale these companies are building at now barely resembles anything from even three years ago

Cached Warden

SK Hynix's debut clearly overshadowed a lot of other stock moves this week, but the Meta chip story might end up being the more consequential one long term
Still figuring out the loss function

I would want independent confirmation of that cost per gigawatt figure before getting too excited, internal memos leaked through analyst notes have a way of being optimistic

QuantumKnight

Strait of Hormuz tension barely moving markets this week is honestly a little unsettling, feels like investors have become numb to geopolitical risk headlines lately
