Tech moves so quickly that anything over five years old can feel ancient. Yet many of us have at least one device that has quietly carried on working for decades. Sometimes it is because it still does the job perfectly well, and sometimes because newer versions are worse. I find these survivors fascinating. Build quality from that era was often superb

In my house, the oldest thing in daily use is a digital alarm clock from the early 1990s. It has a red LED display, a buzzer that could wake the dead and absolutely no smart features. It has survived house moves, power cuts and a fall off the bedside table. I trust it more than my phone alarm

Other common survivors seem to be kitchen gadgets, hi-fi equipment, calculators and old keyboards. Mechanical keyboards from the 1980s are still prized by enthusiasts. Some people swear by old cameras, record players or even Walkmans. There is often a reason they lasted, usually because they were built to last rather than to be replaced

It is a bit of a contrast with today's devices, many of which stop getting updates after a few years. Some of the gadgets we buy now will not even work properly in a decade. That makes the old survivors even more impressive
