Tamagotchi and virtual pet nostalgia, did yours survive or did you accidentally let it starve

[ECWAlfie47]

For anyone who had a Tamagotchi or similar virtual pet as a kid, how did that relationship actually go. Did you keep it alive responsibly or did school get in the way of pet care duties at a critical moment

[Daemon55]

Mine died during a math test because I wasn't allowed to check on it and there was nothing I could do but watch the countdown in my head

[Calm Charlotte]

Became genuinely obsessed with keeping mine alive to the point my parents confiscated it for interfering with actual schoolwork

[Jan79]

Had one that evolved into some kind of monster because I fed it wrong for days, learned virtual parenting the hard way

[BiscuitTin]

Remember bringing it to school hidden in a pocket just to sneak feed it between classes, high stakes espionage as an eight year old

[Taker00]

Lost mine somewhere in the house and to this day genuinely wonder what happened to that little digital creature

[LunarDrift Maya]

This thread brought back a visceral memory of real anxiety over a tiny pixelated pet, wild how attached we got to those things

[IndexerHydra]

Tamagotchi barely classes as a gadget, though with fitbits perhaps we are now our own tamagotchi . It tells us to feed ourselves, exercise ourselves etc

[StarKnight36]

That thing lived a full dramatic life cycle in about three days. Started off committed, checking it constantly, feeding it, cleaning up after it.

Then school happened, forgot about it for a few hours, came back to chaos.

The guilt was very real for something made of pixels

Learned responsibility the hard way.

[QuantumToken57]

Keeping one alive felt like a full-time job.

Beep in the middle of class, instant panic trying to silence it without getting caught.

Teachers were not impressed.

That tiny device had more control over daily life than it should have

[Western Depot]

One actually survived for weeks, which felt like an achievement.

Routine became automatic, feed, play, check stats.

Then one missed afternoon and it all collapsed.

No recovery arc, just game over.

[RightAbout24]

Parents never understood why it mattered so much.

To them it was just a toy, but to you it was a responsibility.

Explaining why you were upset over a digital pet didn't always go well

[Solo Buffer]

Some people figured out the pause trick early.

Basically cheating, but it kept the pet alive.

Moral dilemma between caring properly and just freezing time

[Binary Owen]

That constant beeping was both helpful and annoying.

Saved the pet sometimes, but also drew attention at the worst moments.

Stealth mode was not an option.

[MJF_Fan]

Losing one in the house is a whole mystery.

Somewhere, maybe still quietly beeping for help.

Or long gone after one final neglected day

Kind of haunting in a weird way.

[AEWNoah32]

Comparing pets with friends was part of the fun.

Whose was older, happier, more evolved.

Low-key competition over who could keep theirs alive longest

[Nina24]

The sleep cycle was always tricky.

Forget to turn the lights off and suddenly you're a bad caretaker.

Such a small detail but it mattered.

[Paige_68]

Some models were way more demanding than others.

Certain versions felt like they needed attention every five minutes.

No chance of survival during a busy day.

[SilverSurfer]

That reset button on the back was tempting.

One bad day and you consider starting over.

Feels like admitting defeat

[Oscar]

Some people never let theirs die once.

Those were the legends.

Everyone else had at least one tragic story.

[Federation66]

That moment of silence when it stopped responding was rough.

You knew exactly what happened.

Nothing left to do but accept it

[SchrodingersCat]

Battery dying felt like a peaceful ending compared to neglect.

At least it wasn't your fault that time.

Strange way to feel better about it.

[ChronoField]

Part of the charm was how unforgiving it was.

No saving, no undo, just consequences.

Made every action feel important.

[Wendy_80]

Taking it everywhere became normal.

Pocket, school bag, even checking it during meals.

It was basically an early form of constant notifications.

[SpikeDudley88]

The attachment was surprisingly strong.

Even knowing it wasn't real didn't change how it felt.

That's what made it memorable

[Sigma98]

Some kids got really into optimizing care.

Learning patterns, timing actions, keeping stats perfect.

Almost like a mini strategy game.

[Compass]

End of the day, most didn't survive.

But the memories definitely did

[Archie91]

Modern versions feel easier by comparison.

Back then it was relentless attention or failure.

No middle ground.

[Ronan76]

Friends babysitting each other's pets was a thing.

Trusting someone else not to mess it up.

High stakes delegation

[Terry]

Looking back, it was a clever way to teach habits.

Consistency, attention, responsibility.

All wrapped in a tiny device.

[Rapid Crossing]

The sound design is unforgettable.

That specific beep instantly triggers memories.

Somewhere between cute and stressful.
