Meta quietly paused its plan to cap a free smart glasses feature at 3 hours a month after backlash

[StoneCold_99]

Meta has paused plans to limit free use of Conversation Focus, a Ray-Ban smart glasses feature that amplifies the voice of whoever a wearer is talking to in loud settings, to just three hours per month, after user backlash following the restriction's rollout. Beyond that free allowance, owners would have needed to subscribe to Meta One Premium at $19.99 a month, which still capped usage at 15 hours with no rollover of unused hours between billing cycles. Spread evenly, the original free allowance worked out to roughly six minutes a day, easily consumed by a single noisy dinner or a long meeting

The core criticism centered on the fact that Conversation Focus runs entirely on-device using the glasses' own beamforming microphones, with no cloud server costs involved, raising real questions about what was actually driving the monthly cap if not simply pushing more owners toward a recurring subscription. Meta spokesperson Tyler Yee told The Verge, we heard the feedback so we're pausing its subscription tests for now, and confirmed the feature will remain free through Meta's Early Access Program for early testers while the company works on a better approach, though Meta has notably not promised the feature will stay permanently unrestricted

The episode lands as Meta pushes AI glasses harder as a genuine revenue driver beyond its overwhelmingly ad dependent business, which generated $55.02 billion of the company's $56.31 billion total first quarter revenue. Chris Harrison, director of Carnegie Mellon University's Future Interfaces Group, argued the original plan was fundamentally about monetizing customers who already purchased the hardware rather than covering any real ongoing operating cost, a framing that captures why a feature running entirely offline being rate limited struck so many owners as a bait and switch on something they'd already paid for

Rate limiting a feature that runs entirely on-device with zero server costs was always going to look like a pure monetization grab, glad the backlash actually forced a real reversal rather than just quiet PR damage control

[SortedMate]

Six minutes a day as the effective free allowance is such a stingy number once you actually do the math, no wonder people who bought these specifically for the hearing assistance angle were furious

[Tel86]

Meta not promising the feature stays permanently free is the detail that matters most here, this reads like a tactical pause rather than a genuine change of philosophy about charging for hardware features

[Messi]

The accessibility angle makes this feel worse than a typical feature paywall, people who bought these glasses specifically to help hear better in noisy environments were the ones hit hardest by the cap

[Aaron_67]

The heavy reliance on advertising revenue explains the pressure to find literally any other income stream, but nickel and diming an accessibility feature was a bad way to go about it

[LifeAdmin58]

Curious whether this reappears later with better messaging rather than actually being abandoned, pausing and quietly reintroducing a controversial policy months later is a common corporate pattern

[CyberWarden61]

Chris Harrison's framing is exactly right, this was about squeezing more subscription revenue out of people who already paid full price for the hardware, not about covering any real ongoing cost

[Terry84]

Glad to see actual user backlash still moves the needle on decisions like this, it's a good reminder that public pressure can walk back a bad monetization plan before it fully takes hold

[Fam]

Good example of a company testing how far it can push monetizing hardware people already own, and getting real pushback before it became a permanent policy

[StringTheory95]

This should be a cautionary tale for every hardware company eyeing on-device AI as a subscription opportunity, people will pay for new cloud features but not for capabilities baked into silicon they already bought
