So big news so I thought I'd post about this.

The Best Amazon Fire Sticks in 2026 (And Why the New One Is Confusing)

If you are buying a Fire Stick in 2026, things are no longer as simple as picking the newest model.

Amazon now sells two completely different types of Fire TV devices:

* Traditional models based on Android (Fire OS)
* Newer models based on Vega OS (locked down)

At first glance they look similar. In reality they behave very differently.

This guide breaks down the best Fire Sticks you should actually buy, and explains why the newest model could cause problems for a lot of people.
Current Fire Stick Lineup

Right now the main devices are:

* Fire TV Stick HD
* Fire TV Stick 4K
* Fire TV Stick 4K Plus
* Fire TV Stick 4K Max
* Fire TV Stick 4K Select

The key difference is the operating system.

Older models run Fire OS which is Android-based and flexible.

Newer models like the Select run Vega OS, which is restricted and does not allow sideloading.
Best Overall: Fire TV Stick 4K Max

This is still the best choice for most users.

* Fast performance
* WiFi 6 support
* Dolby Vision and Atmos
* Full app compatibility
* Supports sideloading

If you want a device that just works without limitations, this is the one to get.
Best Value: Fire TV Stick 4K Plus

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus

This is the sweet spot for price and performance.

* Good speed
* Android-based system
* Full app support
* Usually cheaper than the Max

If you want a solid device without paying extra, this is a safe choice.
Budget Option: Fire TV Stick HD

This is only worth considering if you need something cheap.

* 1080p only
* Lower performance
* Basic features

If the price difference is small, it is usually better to step up to a 4K model.
The Problem Device: Fire TV Stick 4K Select

This is where things start to go wrong.

On paper it looks like a good deal. In reality it introduces major limitations.

No sideloading
You cannot install apps outside of the Amazon Appstore.

That means:

* No Kodi
* No custom APK installs
* No niche or third-party apps

Limited app ecosystem
The available apps are far fewer compared to Android-based Fire Sticks.

Confusing naming
The name "Select" makes it sound like a premium upgrade.

It is not.

It is actually more restricted than older models.

HOWEVER Amazon is continuing to move toward this new system

New devices are expected to launch soon, but they may not use the "Select" name. It makes it clear "For enhanced security, this device prevents sideloading or installing apps from unknown sources. Only apps from the Fire TV Amazon Appstore are available for download"

This creates a real problem:

* New devices may look like upgrades
* They may still run Vega OS
* They may still block sideloading

So you could end up buying a newer device that actually does less.
What You Should Buy

If you want flexibility, avoid Vega OS devices.

Best choices:

* Fire TV Stick 4K Max
* Fire TV Stick 4K Plus

Only consider the Select if:

* You only use mainstream apps
* You do not need sideloading
* You want the cheapest option
Final Thoughts

Amazon is clearly shifting toward a more controlled ecosystem.

That may be fine for casual users, but it is a downgrade for anyone who installs their own apps.

The biggest issue is not the hardware.

It is the naming.

Right now:

* Newer does not mean better
* And that will confuse a lot of buyers

If you want full control, stick with the established models

There is something true in that that is hard to articulate. What strikes me most is the thing it does not quite say directly.

Curious what others make of it
It's only banter... mostly
