So many people ask me this question daily. So here it is....

Fire Stick Alternatives in 2026 (If Amazon Keeps Locking Things Down)

Amazon is clearly moving toward a more controlled ecosystem.

With newer Fire Sticks removing sideloading and switching to Vega OS, a lot of users are starting to look elsewhere.

The good news is you are not stuck. There are strong alternatives, and in some cases they are actually better depending on what you want.

This guide breaks down the best Fire Stick alternatives and what each one is good at.
What Actually Matters Now

Before choosing an alternative, focus on what really matters:

* App freedom and sideloading support
* Performance and speed
* Ease of use
* Ecosystem lock-in

Fire Sticks used to balance all of these. Newer ones no longer do.
Best Simple Alternative: Roku Streaming Stick 4K

Roku Streaming Stick 4K

This is the closest replacement for a Fire Stick if you just want something simple and reliable.

* Very easy to use interface
* Huge range of mainstream apps
* Stable and consistent performance

Roku does not support sideloading, but it is clear about that. There is no confusion or hidden restrictions.

Best for:

* Non-technical users
* Households that only use major streaming apps
Best for Flexibility: Chromecast with Google TV (4K)

Chromecast with Google TV 4K

If you are moving away from Fire Sticks because of restrictions, this is where you should look first.

* Android TV based
* Supports sideloading
* Access to Google Play Store
* Built-in casting from your phone

This is effectively what Fire Sticks used to be before the shift toward Vega OS.

Best for:

* Power users
* People installing APKs
* Anyone who wants full control
Best Premium Option: Apple TV 4K

Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen)

This is the high-end option.

* Extremely fast and smooth
* Excellent video and audio quality
* Clean interface with minimal ads
* Long-term software support

The downsides are the price and the Apple ecosystem lock-in.

Best for:

* Apple users
* People who want a polished, hassle-free experience
Best Power User Device: NVIDIA Shield TV Pro

NVIDIA Shield TV Pro

This is the opposite of a locked-down device.

* Full Android TV system
* Supports sideloading
* Excellent for Kodi and Plex
* Handles advanced setups easily

If Amazon is moving toward restrictions, this is one of the last devices going in the other direction.

Best for:

* Advanced users
* Media servers and custom setups
Budget Alternative: ONN 4K Streaming Box

ONN 4K Streaming Box

This is a low-cost option that still gives you flexibility.

* Android TV based
* Supports sideloading
* Very affordable

It is not the most powerful device, but it gives you freedom at a low price.

Best for:

* Secondary TVs
* Cheap Android TV setups
Final Thoughts

If Amazon continues pushing Vega OS, the streaming market is splitting into clear directions.

Some devices are becoming more locked down and simplified.

Others are staying open and flexible.

Fire Sticks used to sit in the middle. That is changing.

If you care about control, sideloading, or custom apps, the safest move right now is to switch to Android-based devices while they are still available.

Because once more manufacturers follow Amazon's approach, your options will shrink quickly

Can you tell me what the best apps are? maybe in a different topic?

Yeah that is the sensible route. Event viewer is your friend on Windows, most people never look at it.

Give it a go and report back
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

uBlock Origin is the non-negotiable one. The web without it is genuinely bad. The Manifest V3 changes affected it but it still works and is still the best
