Another question in the series... Give your answers on a postcard

Should You Uninstall Apps on Your Fire Stick to Make It Faster?

A lot of people assume their Fire Stick is slow because they have too many apps installed.

So the first thing they do is start deleting everything.

But does that actually help?

The short answer is: sometimes, but not for the reason most people think.
What Actually Slows Down a Fire Stick

Fire Sticks do not slow down just because apps are installed.

They slow down because of:

* Low free storage
* Background processes
* Cache buildup
* Limited RAM

Simply having apps installed does not automatically use resources.

Most apps only run when you open them.
When Uninstalling Apps Helps

Removing apps can improve performance in specific situations.

1. You Are Running Out of Storage

Fire Sticks have very limited storage.

When storage gets low:

* The system has less room for temporary files
* Updates may fail
* Performance can drop

If your storage is nearly full, uninstalling apps will help.

2. Apps Running in the Background

Some apps do not fully close and may keep running.

This can use RAM and slow things down.

Removing apps you never use can reduce this.

3. Poorly Optimised Apps

Not all apps are well built.

Some can:

* Use too many resources
* Leave background services running
* Cause lag

If you notice slowdowns after installing something, remove it.
When Uninstalling Apps Does NOT Help

This is where most people get it wrong.

Deleting apps will not magically speed up your Fire Stick if:

* You still have plenty of free storage
* The apps were not running in the background
* The slowdown is caused by cache or system clutter

In these cases, removing apps will make little to no difference.
What You Should Do Instead

If your Fire Stick is slow, focus on these first.

1. Clear App Cache

Go to:
Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications

Clear cache for:

* Streaming apps
* Browsers
* Large apps

This often gives an immediate speed boost.

2. Restart the Device

A simple restart clears memory and background processes.

This is one of the fastest fixes.

3. Check Available Storage

If storage is low:

* Remove large unused apps
* Delete downloads or files

Aim to keep some free space available.

4. Limit Background Apps

Avoid installing apps you do not use.

Fewer apps means fewer chances of background activity.
A Note on Newer Fire Sticks

Newer Fire Sticks using Vega OS are more controlled.

They may handle background processes differently, but they also:

* Limit what apps you can install
* Reduce your ability to optimise manually

So while they may feel more stable, you also lose control.
Final Answer

Uninstalling apps can help, but only if:

* Your storage is nearly full
* The apps are actually causing problems

Otherwise, it is not the main fix.

If you want a faster Fire Stick, focus on:

* Freeing up storage
* Clearing cache
* Restarting regularly

Those will give you better results than deleting random apps

OK this makes sense. My firestick is newer, and shitter than my earlier one
Measure twice, post once

Q

Definitely cheaper specs. Some apps like PrimeVideo crash all the time

Yeah I'm cancelling subscriptions left right and centre and focusing on one. Then deleting the apps for now

JayJ

I tried that and hit a problem at the second stage. Buy slightly more materials than you need, you will always use them.

Post a photo when it is done

That resonates with me. Sometimes the value is in the details people nearly leave out.

I find these conversations more useful than reading reviews. :(

Not worth cutting corners on that part. Good luck with it

WhatUQuant

That is the conclusion most people following it closely are landing on. The speed of the news cycle means most things get forgotten before they are properly resolved.

I will keep following it. :)

Yes, and there is more to it too. Curious what others make of it

That is pretty much what I found too. When I ran into something similar the biggest improvement came from stripping things back and checking the obvious basics first.

Let us know how it goes

Cheugy

Not bad at all. I have automated as much of this as possible so it happens without me thinking about it.

Might save you more than you think
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

NightOwl

I bounced off it for different reasons. Still playing it tbh

Rough Reece

Yeah that sounds about right. Definitely worth picking up

Uninstalling apps on a Fire Stick can help a bit, but it is not the magic speed boost people expect

Most of the slowdown comes from background services, cache buildup, and older hardware limitations rather than just app count

Still, removing apps you never use can free up storage and reduce clutter, which sometimes helps navigation feel a little snappier
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Dan

If your Fire Stick is really struggling, uninstalling apps is only part of the solution

Old firmware updates and overloaded storage can make a bigger difference than people expect

Sometimes a factory reset gives better results than hours of manual cleanup, although it is a bit of a last resort option

BrightCanopy

People often treat Fire Stick like a mini PC and install everything they find

Then it slowly turns into a crowded system trying to load ten things at once

Removing apps does help, but only if you are also realistic about the hardware limits underneath it all

Owen73

Fire Stick performance issues are usually a combination of storage pressure and aging processor limits

Uninstalling apps helps reduce one part of that equation but does not fix the underlying hardware ceiling

Still worth doing if you are trying to squeeze a bit more life out of it before upgrading

EntangledOne

At the end of the day, uninstalling apps is worth doing but it is not the whole story

Think of it as maintenance rather than repair

If the device is still slow after that, it is probably just reaching its natural limits rather than being overloaded

Cobra69

I actually like doing a full cleanup every few months

Uninstall unused apps, clear cache, restart everything, and it feels like a fresh start

It does not make it faster in a dramatic way, but it keeps it from gradually getting worse

MondayMoan31

I went through this exact thing last year when my Fire Stick started feeling sluggish

Deleting unused apps helped slightly, but the real improvement came from clearing cache and restarting it properly

Also worth checking which apps auto-run in the background because some of them are way more active than you would think

RayOfLight99

The biggest performance gain I saw was actually from rebooting it regularly instead of just leaving it on standby

Uninstalling apps was secondary, more like housekeeping than performance tuning

It felt less like speeding it up and more like stopping it from tripping over itself every time I opened Netflix

Skibidi

There is also the psychological side of it

When the home screen is cluttered with apps you do not use, it just feels slower even if performance has not changed much

Cleaning it up makes the device feel more responsive even when the actual speed difference is small

Cass_9

I think a lot of people underestimate how little storage these devices actually have

A few large apps plus cached data and suddenly everything feels cramped

Uninstalling apps is less about speed and more about giving the system room to breathe

WhatUQuant

Tried the uninstall approach and did not notice much change at first

Then I realized half the issue was apps I thought I deleted still running processes or leaving behind data

Clearing cache and force stopping everything made more difference than removing the apps themselves
git commit -m "fixed everything"

Brad92

One thing that helped me more than uninstalling apps was turning off autoplay previews

Those little video thumbnails constantly loading in the background add up over time

Once I disabled them the interface felt noticeably lighter even with the same apps installed

RoughDaemon

I kept uninstalling apps thinking I would eventually hit a breakthrough in speed

It never really happened because the bottleneck was not storage but processing power

At some point I accepted that the device was just aging and no amount of cleanup would fully change that

Hollow Pete

If you are only using a handful of apps anyway, uninstalling the rest is still a good idea

Less clutter means fewer accidental launches and faster navigation through menus

It is not a dramatic speed fix, but it makes the experience smoother in a practical day to day way

DarkEnergy27

Another overlooked trick is using a wired ethernet adapter if your setup supports it

A lot of perceived slowness comes from buffering and network hiccups rather than the device itself

People focus on apps when the real issue is sometimes just unstable WiFi

Solid Gary

Fire Stick behaves a lot better when it is treated like a streaming device rather than a general purpose gadget

Keep only what you actually use and avoid piling on extras

That mindset alone prevents most slowdown complaints before they even start

ScarletDaemon

I noticed after uninstalling a bunch of apps that the interface still felt the same for a while

Then over a few days it gradually became more responsive, probably after background processes settled

So the effect might not be instant, which makes people think it did nothing
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

Margin

A lot of guides online overpromise what uninstalling apps can do

It is helpful, but it is not turning a budget device into a premium one

Managing expectations is half the battle with these streaming sticks
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

Cheeky Shaun

If you have never cleared cache on your Fire Stick, that is usually the first thing to try before uninstalling anything

Cache buildup can get surprisingly large over time and slows down menu loading

After that, removing unused apps becomes more of a tidy up step than a performance fix
