Building a new PC soon, is 16GB of RAM still fine or should I be going for 32GB given how expensive memory has gotten?

Is 16GB enough for general everyday use?
Yes, for browsing, office work, streaming and most non gaming tasks, 16GB is still comfortably enough in 2026

Is 16GB enough for gaming specifically?
For most current games, yes, though a handful of newer, more demanding titles are starting to recommend 32GB for the best experience, particularly with background apps like Discord and a browser also open

When does 32GB actually start to matter?
Heavier multitasking, video editing, running virtual machines, or working with large creative software projects, that's where 32GB genuinely becomes noticeable rather than just a nice to have

Does dual channel matter more than total capacity?
Yes, running two matched sticks instead of one larger single stick meaningfully improves performance in many workloads, so 2x8GB usually outperforms a single 16GB stick even though the total capacity is the same

Given current memory prices, what's the practical advice?
If budget is genuinely tight, 16GB dual channel is still a completely reasonable starting point, just make sure your motherboard has two free slots so you can add more later once prices settle rather than being forced to replace what you already bought

Short version
- 16GB dual channel is fine for most people building today
- 32GB matters more for heavy multitasking and creative work than pure gaming
- Buy 2 sticks not 1 for the dual channel benefit
- Leave free slots to expand later rather than overpaying now at current inflated prices

Went with 32GB purely because of how unstable memory pricing has been lately, wanted to just be done with the decision for a few years

16GB dual channel here and genuinely never felt limited outside of one specific video editing project
