Sequels are a difficult one for me this year. Part of me wants to see the big established franchises because there is usually a reason they became popular, but another part is desperate for something completely original. A film does not need ten years of backstory before I can care about the characters.

The best surprises are often the films that barely register before release. You go in expecting nothing, discover that the writing is sharp and the cast has chemistry, and suddenly you are recommending it to everyone. Meanwhile the film that had the giant marketing campaign ends up being the one you cannot remember six weeks later.

So my April watchlist is deliberately loose. A couple of obvious choices, then whatever gets good reactions from people whose taste I trust. That tends to work better than building a list entirely from studio trailers.
