My own pick is genuinely believable brain computer interfaces for basic device control, not the full science fiction vision of uploading your consciousness somewhere, but simple enough neural interfaces letting someone control a cursor or a prosthetic limb through thought alone, that already exists in early clinical trials today and feels like a natural next decade of steady incremental progress rather than some distant hypothetical

Quantum computing is the one that gets the most breathless coverage right now but honestly feels furthest from the actual everyday sci-fi vision most people have in their heads, the current reality is noisy error prone systems solving narrow specialized problems in a lab, versus the popular imagination of some magic box instantly solving anything computationally difficult you throw at it

Meanwhile something like genuinely capable home robots doing real general household chores has been promised in fiction since at least the nineteen sixties and somehow still feels perpetually five years away no matter how much other AI progress happens elsewhere, dexterous manipulation and genuine physical world navigation in a cluttered home turns out to be a much harder problem than language or even complex reasoning
