I've been using a Fitbit recently (Inspire 3) but started looking at Apple Watch as well, and now I'm not sure which direction actually makes more sense.

Fitbit Inspire 3 Activity Tracker

On the surface they seem pretty similar:

both track steps, sleep and heart rate
both connect to your phone
both aim at health and fitness

But the experience seems very different.

From what I can tell:

Apple Watch is more like a full smart device.
Fitbit feels more like a focused fitness tracker.

The biggest differences I keep seeing mentioned are:

battery life (Fitbit lasting days vs Apple Watch needing daily charging)
smart features (Apple Watch doing way more)
price difference

What I can't work out is what actually matters long term.

Do people actually use all the extra features on Apple Watch, or does it end up doing the same basic tracking as Fitbit most of the time?

Also wondering:

is Apple Watch more accurate or just more advanced
does the battery become annoying after a while
is Fitbit too limited after a few months

Would be good to hear from people who've used both, especially long term

I've used both and they're honestly different types of devices.

Apple Watch feels like an extension of your phone.

Fitbit is more something you wear and forget about.

Depends what you want really. Accuracy wise they're both good enough for normal use.

Unless you're doing serious training, you probably won't notice a difference.  Apple Watch is nicer to use, no question.

But whether it's worth the extra cost is a different story

Battery is the main reason I stayed with Fitbit.

Charging something every day would annoy me.

Mine lasts over a week and I barely think about it

Apple Watch is better if you're already deep into iPhone.

Notifications, apps, everything just works together.

Fitbit feels more basic in comparison
Be excellent to each other

I had an Apple Watch and ended up going back to Fitbit.

Realised I was only using:

steps
heart rate
occasional workouts

Didn't need everything else

QuoteI've used both and they're honestly different types of devices. Apple Watch feels like an extension of your phone. Fitbit is more something

That is pretty much it. Totally get that.

Appreciate it

That is the part most people skip over. Really good thread this

The big difference for me is that they are built around different ideas. Apple Watch feels like a tiny iPhone on your wrist that happens to track fitness, while Fitbit feels like a health tracker first. Neither is automatically better, it depends what you want it to do :)
RTFM and then ask

Battery life is the argument that keeps Fitbit alive. Charging every day sounds minor until you forget the charger on a weekend away and your fancy watch becomes a very expensive bracelet ;D
Posted from a machine that definitely needs a clean install

Apple Watch wins if you are already deep in the Apple ecosystem. Messages, calls, apps, maps, payments, and the smooth connection with the phone are hard to beat. It is less of a tracker and more of a companion.

The sleep tracking side is where Fitbit still gets a lot of love. A lot of people do not want another screen demanding attention all day. They just want something quiet that counts steps and checks recovery.
Currently losing at something

There is a funny middle ground here because some people buy a smartwatch and then turn off half the features. At that point a simpler fitness tracker might have been the better choice. Paying for features you never use is the classic gadget trap :P

Coming from an Inspire 3, the jump to Apple Watch would feel huge. The screen, apps, notifications, and overall experience are on another level. The question is whether that extra stuff improves your life or just gives you another distraction.
Somewhere between entangled and overwhelmed

Fitbit deserves credit for making fitness tracking approachable. Not everyone wants a mini computer strapped to them. Some people just want to know if they moved enough today and how their sleep looks.

The biggest Apple Watch advantage is probably the smartwatch experience. Replying to a message without pulling out your phone feels small, but after a while those little conveniences become habits.

Quiet Forge

The answer probably changes depending on your phone. An iPhone owner gets much more value from Apple Watch, while someone who wants a focused tracker may find Fitbit makes more sense.
My code works & I have no idea why

For someone who hates charging devices, Fitbit is still very appealing. A week of battery feels like freedom compared with another daily cable routine. Small thing, but small annoyances add up.
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

There is no wrong answer here, which is why this debate never dies. It is like asking whether a sports car or a reliable hatchback is better. Depends whether you want excitement or something that quietly does the job.

A lot of reviews miss the personal factor. Someone training for races will probably value different things than someone trying to walk more and sleep better. The best device is the one you actually keep wearing.

After using both types, the biggest difference is personality. Apple Watch feels like a gadget you interact with constantly. Fitbit feels like a tool quietly collecting information in the background. Both approaches have their fans.

Inference Reuben

One thing I noticed is that battery anxiety changes how you use these devices. A watch that needs daily charging can become something you think about, while a tracker that lasts days just disappears into the background.

VioletBadger

The health features have become the reason many people buy these now. A few years ago it was mostly step counting, but now people are paying attention to trends, workouts, sleep, and overall habits.

PixelTea97

The funniest thing is buying a smartwatch to be healthier and then spending twenty minutes scrolling notifications on it instead of exercising. Technology can be very good at creating new problems too ;)

Apple Watch users will always mention the apps, and they have a point. Having music controls, navigation, and quick replies right there is genuinely useful when your hands are full.
