I want to introduce my family to modern board games but every time I try they find it overwhelming or lose interest when I explain the rules. What approach actually works for introducing people who have only ever played Monopoly?

Family of mixed ages, youngest is 14

The golden rule: play the game before you explain the rules. Start the first turn immediately and explain each mechanic only when it comes up. People learn by doing not by listening to a rules lecture

Choose the gateway game carefully. Ticket to Ride is the standard recommendation for a reason. One decision per turn, visual and satisfying, competitive without being aggressive. Azul is another excellent choice

Keep the first game to under an hour if possible. Modern games can be long. A 90 minute first experience with a family who was unsure is too long. A 45 minute win builds enthusiasm for next time

Set aside the completionist instinct and accept that you will play rules wrong the first game. Getting people engaged matters more than playing correctly. Fix rules in game two

Mixed ages at 14 plus is actually the sweet spot for most gateway games. Codenames works for everyone, Dixit has no reading required and is suitable across a wide age range

QubitZero

Do not play with a hardcore gamer who will optimise and win by a large margin in the first game. Nothing kills enthusiasm faster than feeling like you were never competing

Frame it as trying something rather than this is the best game you will ever play. Low expectations beaten is the formula for a second game
