God of War Laufey, Until Dawn 2 and Silent Hill: Downfall Headline Sony's State of Play June 2026

Sony's State of Play on June 2 packed over 60 minutes of reveals anchored by two major franchise announcements. God of War Laufey, the next entry in the Santa Monica Studio series, was revealed as the closing trailer, confirming Kratos returns alongside a storyline centred on the Jotun queen Laufey and Norse mythology threads left unresolved after Ragnarok. Until Dawn 2 was announced as a standalone PS5 sequel developed by Firesprite, featuring an entirely new cast of ghost hunters on a tropical island, continuing the branching decision horror format of the original. Silent Hill: Downfall confirmed a September 24 release date with new character and gameplay footage.

Marvel's Wolverine, in development at Insomniac, showed extended gameplay footage and continues to generate significant anticipation given the studio's track record with Marvel's Spider-Man. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis from Crystal Dynamics was given a February 12 2027 date and confirmed a return to Lara Croft's roots with Peru's Lost Valley among the locations shown. Rayman Legends Retold, a 3D reimagining of the Ubisoft classic with up to four-player couch co-op, confirmed October 1. Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and others all received confirmed 2026 dates.

The State of Play demonstrated Sony's shift away from live service into single player and character-driven experiences, a strategic response to the commercial struggles Marathon has faced since its May launch. Sony opening Marathon's first Open Play Week to non-PlayStation Plus subscribers in June is further evidence the extraction shooter is struggling to build the player base Bungie and Sony had planned on.

God of War Laufey is the announcement PlayStation needed. Ragnarok was excellent but the post-game period has been quiet on first-party exclusives. Kratos and Laufey is the story thread everyone wanted to follow

[RomanReigns26]

Until Dawn 2 with a completely new cast is the right approach. The original's strength was the decision tree and the unpredictability, not the specific characters. New people, same island horror, fresh stakes

Silent Hill: Downfall dated for September 24 means Konami is confident in what they have after years of franchise mismanagement. The Bloober Team remake was divisive but showed there is still appetite for this series done well

[NightOwl]

Marvel's Wolverine being shown after what feels like years of silence is the most anticipated PlayStation exclusive after the God of War announcement. Insomniac's Spider-Man quality applied to Logan is an extremely exciting proposition

Tomb Raider going back to Peru and the Lost Valley is the franchise remembering what made it special. The reboot trilogy had its moments but lost the globe-trotting adventurer in favour of survival horror. Legacy of Atlantis sounds like a course correction

Marathon's Open Play Week for non-Plus subscribers underlines that the extraction shooter has not found its audience. Bungie and Sony needed this game to be a live service cash machine and the numbers are not there

The breadth of the State of Play, God of War, Wolverine, Until Dawn, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, Control, is the most impressive single Sony showcase in years. The question is whether they can actually deliver all of these on time
