I'm trying to figure out which version of Office actually makes sense now in 2026.

Microsoft 365 Family 12-Month Subscription (Up to 6 Users)
This is the subscription version and where Microsoft is putting all the new features. You get the full Office apps, ongoing updates, cloud storage, and AI features as they roll out. It works across multiple devices, so it's the most flexible option if you're using more than one machine.

Microsoft Office 2024 Home & Business (1 PC/Mac Lifetime)
This is the one-time purchase version. You pay once and keep it, which is ideal if you don't want a subscription. It includes the core apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook, but you won't get new features over time, only security updates.

Microsoft Office 2021 Professional (Retail Version)
This is the older version now but still works fine for standard use. It's more of a budget option at this point. Just be aware that it will age out sooner and won't get newer features.

If you're using Office regularly, especially for work, Microsoft 365 is the one that makes the most sense. It's the only version that keeps improving and getting new features, including AI tools.

If you don't want a subscription at all, then Office 2024 is the better long-term option over 2021.

Office 2021 is really just for saving money short term, but you're buying into something that's already on its way out.

From what I can tell, Microsoft has basically split things into subscription vs one-time purchase.
Microsoft 365 is the subscription version and it's clearly where all the new features are going. You get the full apps plus cloud storage and ongoing updates. It also works across multiple devices, which is useful if you're switching between PC and mobile. Microsoft has been pushing AI features into this version as well, so it's the one that keeps evolving over time.
Office 2024 is more like the traditional version. You pay once and keep it, which is appealing if you don't want another subscription. The downside is it doesn't really change after you buy it, so what you get on day one is what you're stuck with apart from security updates.
Office 2021 is basically the older version now. It still works fine for Word, Excel, etc, but it's already behind and will age out sooner. It's mostly a budget option at this point.

Curious what others are doing. Are people sticking with one-time Office or just moving over to 365 now?
