Best file ZIP software for Android [2026]

[Marcus]

Worth knowing first, Android can already open plain ZIP files natively through its built in Files app, whether that's Google Files, Samsung's My Files, or whatever the manufacturer calls its equivalent, no extra app needed just to extract a basic ZIP someone emailed you. Where a dedicated app actually earns its place is everything beyond that, RAR and 7z support since Android has no native support for either, creating new archives rather than just opening them, password protection, splitting large archives into volumes, and repairing damaged files

ZArchiver remains the most recommended pick across the board in 2026, and it's easy to see why, a lightweight app that handles an enormous range of formats, ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, ISO, all in one place, with a clean interface that doesn't bury basic functions behind menus. It's free, has no intrusive ads compared to some competitors, and is the closest thing to a universal answer for anyone who just wants one app that opens and creates virtually anything

For anyone specifically working with RAR files often, the official RAR app from RARLAB, the same company behind WinRAR on desktop, is worth having installed alongside or instead of ZArchiver, since it comes from the actual format's creators and handles RAR specific features like recovery volumes more reliably than some third party alternatives. B1 Archiver is another solid all in one option, supporting more than 30 languages and handling the same broad format range as ZArchiver, a reasonable alternative if you want a second opinion on file integrity for something important

The honest recommendation for 2026, don't bother installing anything if you're just occasionally opening a basic ZIP, the built in Files app already covers that. Install ZArchiver the moment you need to open a RAR or 7z file, create a password protected archive, or split something too large to send in one piece, it covers the overwhelming majority of what anyone actually needs from a mobile archive tool, with the official RAR app as a solid backup specifically for RAR heavy use cases

ZArchiver has been on every Android phone I've owned for years now, genuinely can't think of a single format it's failed to open for me yet

[DelPiero58]

Good callout that the built in Files app already handles plain ZIP, so many people install a whole extra app for something their phone could already do out of the box

[TheRizz07]

The official RAR app from RARLAB is underrated, went years using third party alternatives before realizing the actual format creators had their own free Android app the whole time

[MJF86]

Password protection and splitting large files into volumes are the two features that actually justify installing something beyond the stock Files app for me personally

B1 Archiver's language support is impressive, recommended it to a relative who doesn't speak much English and it covered their language perfectly without any workaround needed

[Paul_13]

Worth adding, always check an app's permissions before installing anything file management related, a surprising number of shady zip apps on the Play Store ask for way more access than compressing files should ever need

[ShawnMichaels07]

Been using ZArchiver since it first started getting popular years ago and it's aged remarkably well, still the first thing I install on any new Android phone

[TheRizz00]

This is exactly the app I recommend to anyone who asks, one install covers basically every format they'll ever encounter on a phone

[KeyboardWarrior47]

The distinction between native ZIP support and needing a dedicated app for RAR and 7z specifically is exactly the nuance most people don't know until they hit a file their phone suddenly can't open

ZArchiver being free with no intrusive ads compared to some of the shadier zip apps on the Play Store is worth emphasizing, plenty of alternatives bury basic extraction behind a paywall or ad wall
