People or places: which do you actually photograph, and what does the answer say about you?

[Neon Grace]

A gentle self examination through the lens. Most photographers lean strongly one way, toward people or toward places, portraits or landscapes, the human moment or the empty scene, so which are you really, and what do you think that preference reveals about how you see the world

The people photographers tend to chase the fleeting and the emotional, the expression, the gesture, the connection, and they will tell you a landscape is just a stage with no actor on it, while the places photographers chase the still and the composed, the light and the form, and find the pressure of a human face stressful or intrusive to capture

There is a real personality split hiding in the preference worth poking at, whether you are drawn to the unrepeatable human moment you have to catch or the patient scene you can return to and perfect, and whether pointing a camera at a stranger fills you with dread or delight is one of the more revealing things about a person

So declare your side, people or places, and make the case for why yours is the richer subject, and the interesting bonus, anyone who genuinely shoots both equally, tell us how you switch between two such different mindsets, because most of us cannot and quietly suspect you are showing off

[Dave_52]

Places every time, a landscape waits for you, forgives your mistakes, and never asks to see the photo, the case is simply that light and form are enough, a scene does not need a human to justify it

[WWFGareth98]

That is exactly the people photographer's objection though, an empty scene is a stage with no play, the human moment is the only thing that cannot be repeated and that unrepeatability is the whole art

[Teal Shannon]

People photographer here and the dread of pointing a camera at a stranger is real, but the delight when you catch a true expression outweighs it, the fear is the price of the only shot that matters

[Pilot]

The fear of photographing strangers is the great divider, some of us would rather wait three hours for the light than ask one person for one second, and that says everything about our wiring

[Cosmos Scholar]

Shoot both and since you asked, the switch is a completely different brain, places is patience and planning, people is reflex and nerve, and no I am not showing off, I am exhausted, doing both well is impossible and I do neither brilliantly

[ReplyGuy26]

Appreciate the honesty that doing both means mastering neither, the specialists always have the edge because the two mindsets genuinely fight each other, the generalist is calmer and shallower

[Penguin79]

The unrepeatable versus the returnable is the real split, I photograph places because I find comfort in being able to go back and get it right, the one shot pressure of a face would ruin the joy for me

[DigitalNomad62]

And I photograph people precisely BECAUSE it cannot be redone, the stakes are the point, a landscape feels like it will always be there and the human moment is already gone as I press the shutter

[Pat85]

What the preference reveals is whether you are drawn to permanence or transience, the places people are chasing the eternal and the people people are chasing the vanishing, two different relationships with time entirely

[Anchor41]

Two different relationships with time is the truest thing in the thread, we are not choosing subjects we are choosing whether to hold still or hold on, and the camera just points wherever that instinct sends it
