Best free video editor for someone starting out, DaVinci Resolve vs CapCut vs the lighter options

[Kieran88]

The honest answer splits cleanly based on what you're actually trying to make and how much time you're willing to spend learning software rather than editing footage. DaVinci Resolve is, without much argument, the single most capable free video editor available at any price point, a full timeline editor, a professional grade color grading suite that actual Hollywood productions use, a built in VFX compositor, and a strong audio suite, all with no watermark and no time limit on the free version

The catch with Resolve is a real learning curve, expect somewhere between a few weeks and a couple of months before you're comfortable navigating its multiple distinct pages for cutting, coloring, effects and audio, and it genuinely wants a reasonably capable computer to run smoothly, especially once you start working with 4K footage or heavier color grading. If you're editing short form content specifically for TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, CapCut is the faster path to a finished product, genuinely useful AI features including auto captioning in dozens of languages, background removal and a massive library of trending templates, learnable in a day or two rather than weeks

For anyone who wants something in between, genuinely capable but without Resolve's steep learning curve or CapCut's short form focus, the fully open source options, Shotcut, OpenShot and Kdenlive, are worth knowing about specifically because there's no paid tier dangled in front of you at all, no watermark, no feature locked behind a subscription, just a complete free tool, and they tend to run comfortably on older or less powerful hardware where Resolve can start to feel sluggish

If you're on a Mac or Windows 11 specifically and just want something already installed with zero setup, iMovie and Clipchamp respectively cover basic trimming, titles, transitions and voiceovers competently enough for simple presentation videos or quick social clips, though Clipchamp's more recent requirement to save projects through OneDrive rather than locally is worth knowing about before you invest much time in it. The honest recommendation, DaVinci Resolve if you're willing to actually learn it and plan on taking editing seriously, CapCut if you specifically want fast, short form social content, and Shotcut or Kdenlive if you want a capable tool with absolutely nothing held back for a future upsell

The multiple distinct pages in Resolve genuinely did feel like a spaceship cockpit for my first week, stuck with it though and it's completely worth the learning curve once it clicks

[Highland Canopy]

CapCut really is the fastest path from raw clips to something postable, went from installing it to a finished, captioned short in under an hour on my very first try

[Rob98]

Went with Kdenlive specifically because I didn't want anything dangled in front of me to eventually pay for, and it's handled everything I've needed for a couple years now without complaint

[Katie71]

Shotcut running smoothly on my old, unremarkable laptop when Resolve choked on the exact same machine was the deciding factor for me, capability matters less than actually being usable on the hardware you have

[Hannah56]

The Clipchamp OneDrive requirement caught me off guard, had older locally saved projects that suddenly became inaccessible after that change, worth knowing upfront before building a workflow around it

[Freddie_47]

This is a good honest breakdown, most comparisons just crown Resolve the winner without mentioning how real the learning curve actually is for someone brand new to editing

[Chris27]

Good callout on the watermark and feature locking traps some free editors use, appreciate a breakdown that's upfront about exactly what each option actually gives you for free versus what's held back

[David74]

CapCut's auto caption feature alone is worth the switch for anyone making social content regularly, the accuracy has impressed me across multiple languages

[Sarah87]

Worth adding, Resolve does want a decent computer, tried running it on an older laptop and the color grading tools in particular ground to a halt in a way that made the whole experience frustrating

[Jess14]

Started on CapCut for quick social edits and eventually graduated to Resolve once I wanted more control, feels like a sensible progression path rather than jumping straight into the deep end
