Not the productivity wins, the completely unnecessary but delightful side projects. Curious what people have actually built purely because they could, not because it solved anything real

RomanReigns26

Built an agent that argues with itself about which pizza topping is objectively correct, purely for my own entertainment during lunch breaks

QuietObserver13

Made one that writes increasingly dramatic weather reports for my exact location, no practical use whatsoever but I look forward to it every morning

Rustic Stuart

An agent that roasts my code review comments back at me in the style of a disappointed mentor, genuinely humbling and hilarious
VAR can do one

IndexerHydra

Built something that turns my grocery list into a short fantasy quest narrative, completely pointless and I love it
RTFM and then ask

ProperJobs

A bot that just tracks how many times I say honestly in a message and gently calls it out, built entirely as a joke that turned genuinely useful
YNWA.

Cass93

Built a tiny AI that rewrites my grocery list like a noir detective briefing. "Eggs" become "the fragile oval suspects" and "milk" arrives as "the white alibi". It does absolutely nothing useful, but somehow shopping feels like I'm on a mission instead of wandering the aisles half-asleep :)
Normal is overrated

Daz92

Made one that generates fake patch notes for my life. 'v3.4.1: Fixed bug where person keeps opening the fridge expecting new food to appear.' The dumb part is that friends started asking for their own versions, so now it has a weird little audience. Peak pointless automation, and somehow that makes it even better ;)
First post best post ever!!

Cosmos Scholar

An AI fortune teller for my cat was a lot more entertaining than expected. It produces ominous prophecies about sunbeams, cardboard boxes, and the return of the red laser dot. Every reading sounds deeply spiritual and completely unhinged, which is basically perfect. Not a single practical use, but the cat looks suspiciously respected 8)

DecisionNode

There was one that translated old game chat into Shakespearean insults. 'gg ez' becoming 'prithee, thy victory was as expected' never got old. The funniest part was how it escalated arguments that were already lost because nobody could take a feud seriously once it sounded like stage dialogue. Extremely unnecessary, wildly delightful :D
Currently losing at something

RadekVítek

Built a recipe assistant that refuses to answer directly and instead speaks like a smug cooking show host. Ask for scrambled eggs and it responds with, 'First, dear viewer, let us embark upon a humble yet daring pilgrimage into cholesterol.' It is infuriating in the best possible way. The dishes don't improve, but breakfast becomes theater ::)

QubitZero68

A friend made an AI that turns mundane calendar events into movie trailers. 'Tuesday, 3 PM, the quarterly sync. In a world where no one prepared slides...' Absolutely useless, but the dramatic music never fails to get laughs in the office. One boring meeting suddenly feels like the opening scene of a disaster film ;D

Liam97

Built a nonsense museum guide for my apartment, and it narrates every object with total authority. The lamp is an artifact from the Age of Poor Lighting, the old router is a fallen deity, and the couch is apparently a throne of indecision. No practical benefit whatsoever, but guests keep asking for tours. It's the only home automation project that actually feels alive ;)

Somebody made an AI that writes over-the-top sports commentary for ordinary life. Walking to the kitchen becomes a heroic sprint, opening a jar is a clutch playoff performance, and sitting down on the couch is described as an emotional comeback. Feels ridiculous until the third time it calls you a veteran of the refrigerator lane. Then it becomes a problem in the best way >:(
// TODO: write better signature

WanderingSentinel

Created a tiny agent that answers questions as if it were a bored pirate accountant. Useful? Not remotely. Fun? Absolutely, especially when it starts calculating lunch budgets with phrases like 'arrr, the seas of commerce are fickle today.' The character drift alone is worth the setup. Every output sounds like it was approved by a committee of comedians and bad captains :P

Odd Arrow

Made an AI that invents award titles for everyday chores. Washing dishes becomes the 'Ceremonial Summit of the Sinks,' and taking out the trash is the 'Field Expedition to the Bin Kingdom.' It does not improve motivation in any measurable way, but it does make housework feel weirdly ceremonial. Sometimes ridiculous framing is the only thing standing between us and total domestic despair :(
Cashback on everything or it didn't happen

WaveFunction

A useless but charming one was an AI that writes text adventures about the room you're actually in. It turns a desk into an enchanted console and the nearby mug into a cursed relic with a hydration problem. The story changes depending on what you move or touch, which means even doing nothing feels like a tiny quest. Dumb, yes, but weirdly immersive 8)
ISA maxed. Costs minimised.

Dragon

Built one that generates fake ancient proverbs about whatever you ask. 'He who updates the firmware at dawn shall not fear the blinking light.' It's not wisdom, it's nonsense wearing a mustache, but the delivery makes it feel profound for about five seconds. That five-second window is the whole reason the thing exists ;)

VectorDB Cobra

There was a weekend project that made an AI compose extremely formal complaints about household objects. The toaster was 'operating in a manner inconsistent with expectations,' the shower curtain was 'displaying troubling asymmetry,' and the remote control was 'persistently unavailable when needed most.' No utility, just a lot of dramatic paperwork for inanimate objects. Somehow that felt very on-brand for modern AI :)

WWFMatthew92

The most gloriously pointless one around here is an AI that ranks snacks by alleged medieval battle value. Chips are 'light cavalry,' pretzels are 'siege weapons,' and cookies apparently have 'high morale but poor armor.' It became an instant hit during movie nights because everyone argued with the classifications. Nothing productive emerged, but the snack tray has never had better lore :o

CMPunk

The funniest useless project here was an AI that generated increasingly intense apologies for late replies. By the fifth round it's basically writing the surrender speech of a defeated monarch over a three-word text message. It never helps anyone be less late, but it does make every apology feel like a cinematic event. People deserve that much drama sometimes ::)

Rogue Sam

Built one that turns my browser history into a detective noir monologue. Searching for a screwdriver becomes a shadowy investigation into missing hardware and hidden motives. The whole thing is ridiculous, but it makes the internet feel like a city with alleys instead of a list of links. That alone makes the joke worth keeping around ;)

Cosmos Scholar

A weirdly fun one was an AI that writes fake product reviews for imaginary objects. A bridge gets three stars for 'sturdy vibes but questionable acoustics,' and the moon gets docked for 'excessive night lighting.' Watching it review abstract concepts like a cranky shopper is bizarrely therapeutic. The internet has trained us for this exact kind of nonsense :D
