Not cloud models. Not paid APIs. Something running on your machine, whether that is Ollama, LM Studio, or anything else. Curious what people are actually doing with local inference beyond the obvious

IronWolf

Running a local Qwen 2.5 to summarise my RSS feeds every morning without any data leaving my network. The privacy angle matters for the sources I track
It's not a bug, it's a feature

Dank

Used a local model to review a contract for obvious red flags before sending it to an actual lawyer. Caught two things worth flagging. Saved forty minutes of billable time

CMPunk88

Document Q&A on a folder of PDFs I cannot put in a cloud service. Local RAG pipeline, basic but functional

ProperJobs

Honestly mostly just testing. I have not found a workflow where local beats cloud for my actual work yet. The latency and quality gap is real on my hardware
YNWA.

Offline voice transcription with Whisper running locally. Transcribing interviews without the audio ever touching a third party server
My team is always one signing away

MondayMoan51

Generating synthetic test data for a database schema without sending the schema to any external service

Clever Wrench

The killer use case for local is anything where the data has compliance requirements. Healthcare, legal, financial. Cloud is off the table for those and local fills the gap
