I keep going back and forth on whether it still makes sense to build a serious local AI setup instead of renting cloud GPUs. The upfront cost is brutal once you start looking at workstation hardware, networking gear, storage and cooling, but there is something appealing about owning the entire stack yourself. I started comparing ideas after reading Designing Machine Learning Systems and Building LLM Powered Applications, then fell into a rabbit hole with Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach and Deep Learning. It feels like everyone online says local inference is the future, but the power usage and maintenance side never gets discussed enough

Running locally is absolutely worth it if you care about privacy and experimenting without API costs stacking up every month

I tried the home AI lab route and honestly ended up back on cloud services because the hardware upgrades never stop

The networking and storage side becomes the hidden expense. GPUs get all the attention but fast NVMe arrays and RAM pricing are painful too
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

I think hybrid setups are the smartest option now. Small local models for testing and cloud GPUs only when you need scale
