Dave Meltzer thinks Vince McMahon could make a surprise WWE cameo once his civil case wraps up, just not with any real power

[Mia_59]

With Janel Grant's civil lawsuit accusing former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon of sex trafficking and abuse reportedly moving toward arbitration and coming to a close, wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer discussed on Wrestling Observer Radio whether McMahon might eventually resume some kind of public role in WWE

Meltzer was direct that he doesn't believe McMahon would return to his old positions running WWE's Chairman role or heading up creative, saying he cannot imagine McMahon being put in charge of anything again, and that there's no scenario where McMahon replaces current CEO Nick Khan or takes over booking duties from Paul Levesque. But Meltzer said it wouldn't shock him if WWE brought McMahon back in some kind of figurehead capacity, occasionally trotting him out for television appearances without any actual decision making power attached. Meltzer specifically noted the reaction such a moment would generate, saying if McMahon came out as a surprise on a TV show, it would get a massive crowd reaction regardless of the circumstances surrounding his departure

McMahon resigned from WWE and parent company TKO Group Holdings in 2024, just days after Grant's lawsuit was originally filed, and has had no involvement with the promotion since, though he retains ownership of shares in both WWE and TKO. He has been mentioned only sparingly by the company since his departure, though several WWE personalities did attend his 80th birthday party in New York back in 2025

[PrimeToby37]

The distinction Meltzer draws between a powerless figurehead cameo and actually being restored to any real decision making role feels like the realistic middle ground WWE would actually consider here, if anything at all

[InferenceLoop65]

Noting the reaction a surprise appearance would generate regardless of the circumstances is an uncomfortable but probably accurate read on how a live wrestling crowd would actually respond in the moment

[Postie]

Still holding shares in both WWE and TKO despite having zero operational role since 2024 is worth remembering, financial ties clearly haven't been severed even though his day to day involvement has been

[Neuer31]

This is going to remain a divisive topic among fans regardless of how it plays out, the allegations involved are serious and any potential return would understandably reopen that entire conversation

[Brittle Ruby]

Meltzer being careful to frame this as speculation rather than reporting an actual confirmed plan is an important distinction, this is industry analysis of what might happen, not news of an announced return

[Foundry69]

The 80th birthday party attendance by current WWE talent already showed some of these relationships never fully cut ties personally even after the professional departure, worth keeping in mind alongside this speculation

[AuroraHermit]

A cameo would be a very different question from giving McMahon power again. WWE has used former executives and legends for nostalgia before, but this situation carries serious legal and reputational baggage that makes a simple surprise appearance far more complicated.

Even if the civil case concludes, the company would need to consider the message sent to employees, performers, sponsors, and viewers. A pop from the crowd is not the only measure of whether the decision is responsible. :\

[BrayWyatt_WCW]

The idea sounds plausible from a wrestling-business perspective because McMahon remains connected financially and has a historic relationship with the company. That does not mean a return would be wise or welcomed by everyone involved.

A brief appearance could generate attention, but attention is not automatically positive value. WWE has spent years building a post-McMahon identity, and bringing him back might make every conversation about the past instead of the current product.

[Wendy88]

A cameo would be difficult to present as harmless because the entire point would be the surprise. Surprise is useful when revealing a wrestler; it is less useful when introducing uncertainty about corporate values.

If WWE ever wanted to acknowledge historical contributions, a written archive, documentary context, or carefully handled retrospective might be less disruptive than putting him in the middle of a live segment.

[Vieira50]

If a future appearance is considered, it should come with strict conditions: no authority, no involvement in creative decisions, no access to talent management, and full board-level review. The company would also need to explain why the appearance benefits the organisation.

Those safeguards would not eliminate every concern, but they would make the distinction between nostalgia and power much clearer. A cameo is never just a cameo when the person involved built the system being presented.

[Keane]

There is also a difference between a legal conclusion and a public-relations conclusion. Even if a case ends without the result some people expect, a company may still decide that a return creates unacceptable reputational risk.

Corporate leaders have to consider employees and partners who do not want to share a stage with someone connected to serious allegations. The absence of operational power does not make the optics irrelevant.

[Forge45]

The legal process matters more than the fantasy booking. Until the civil case and related proceedings are resolved, speculation about a cameo risks turning serious allegations into entertainment content.

Afterward, the question should still be assessed through governance and consent. Did the board approve it, were affected employees consulted, and does the appearance serve the company rather than one individual's desire for a spotlight?

[Keane]

There is a huge difference between a shareholder and an operator. Holding shares can provide financial interest without giving someone authority over hiring, creative decisions, talent relations, or corporate policy.

That separation should remain clear. If McMahon ever appears on screen, the company should communicate that the appearance is symbolic and tightly controlled, not a signal that he has resumed any operational role.

[Jordan89]

The most thoughtful response is to wait for the legal process and avoid treating either a cameo or its absence as proof of anything about the allegations. Civil cases can be complicated, and public speculation rarely improves the underlying process.

WWE can move forward without pretending the past did not exist. If McMahon eventually appears, it should be because the company has carefully weighed the consequences, not because a surprise pop was too tempting to resist.

[WaveFunction]

Some fans will argue that wrestling has always separated performers from their personal lives, but that comparison has limits. A storyline controversy is not the same as an ongoing legal dispute involving serious accusations.

The industry has changed because audiences, sponsors, and employees expect stronger standards. A return that might have been routine decades ago could now carry consequences the company cannot simply write into a script.

[Penguin79]

The safest route would be no cameo at all, at least not while the legal and reputational issues remain unsettled. WWE has enough current talent and history to create memorable moments without relying on a former executive at the centre of controversy.

That may disappoint people who want one last dramatic appearance, but restraint can be a sign of competent management. Not every headline needs to become a segment.

Meltzer's prediction is interesting as an industry read, not necessarily as a recommendation. He may be identifying a possible business outcome based on the person's history and remaining financial connections.

Possibility should not be confused with inevitability. WWE can decide that the costs of a cameo outweigh the short-term ratings bump, and that would be a perfectly rational choice.

[Grace]

The financial connection is worth remembering, but shareholders do not automatically receive a microphone and a camera cue. Many companies have investors who never appear publicly and never influence daily decisions.

Maintaining that boundary could actually protect both sides. McMahon retains his financial interests while WWE continues defining its own leadership and public identity.

[Serpent]

Wrestling fans often love a shocking return, but not every real-world figure belongs in a nostalgia segment. The audience can separate character work from reality only up to a point, especially when the surrounding issues involve alleged abuse and trafficking.

A surprise cameo might create a loud reaction, yet the noise could obscure the more important question of whether the company has learned anything about accountability.
