A warmer census than usual. Nearly everyone is carrying at least one compliment that stuck permanently, sometimes from decades ago, sometimes from a stranger, often about something the giver would never guess mattered, so let us collect them, who said it, roughly when, and your best theory of why THAT one lodged when thousands of others evaporated

The pattern from threads like this elsewhere is worth flagging, the keepers are rarely about appearance and almost never from the people closest to us, they tend to be specific, unexpected, and about something we secretly hoped was true but had never heard said aloud

The uncomfortable flip side question is optional but interesting, have you ever learned that something YOU said in passing became someone else's kept compliment, and how strange was it to discover the weight a throwaway sentence had been carrying

And the obvious homework hiding in the thread, if the keepers are specific, unexpected and about hoped for truths, we all know how to hand one to somebody this week, the thread is basically a manual disguised as a memory exercise

A teacher in my final year said you notice things other people walk past, six words, thirty years ago, and I have quietly built an entire career and personality on the permission they gave me

The theory holds in my case, mine was from a near stranger at a funeral who said your dad talked about you like you were the interesting one, and it stuck precisely because it arrived through him rather than to me
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

TheGame92

That one got me at my desk on a Sunday, the second hand compliment is a genre of its own and it is undefeated

Flip side answer as invited, a former junior colleague told me years later that one sentence of mine got her through her worst year, I had zero memory of saying it, terrifying and instructive in equal measure, we are all handing out load bearing sentences blind

Octopus

Mine breaks the pattern slightly, it WAS from someone close, my brother, mid argument of all things, said the infuriating thing about you is that you are usually right, hostile delivery, kept forever, compliments smuggled inside complaints hit different

Elliot_30

A stranger at an open mic night twenty years ago said you look like you belong up there, I did not, I absolutely did not, but I kept going back until the sentence became true, some compliments are prophecies on credit
Question everything. Especially this.

Freya_27

Prophecies on credit is exactly the mechanism, the keeper compliments describe the person you are attempting to become and sign the guarantee early

Arrow

Smallest one in the thread probably, a chef I worked one summer for tasted my staff meal and just nodded and said again tomorrow, two words, I have cooked for people with pleasure for twenty five years since

The homework paragraph called my bluff so, report, told the quiet one on my team today that his questions are usually the ones that save us weeks, watched it land, understood immediately that I had just handed over something permanent, highly recommended
Here more than I should be

LogicWitch

Reading the whole thread, the keepers really are specific, sideways and about hoped for truths, and apparently half of us are now off to go say something deliberate to somebody, best raid this board has ever organised
